Giants still linked to puzzling potential veteran addition that feels disconnected from current roster reality and timeline
Odell Beckham is considering an NFL return. But at 33 years old, the veteran wide receiver is on a different timeline compared to what the Giants’ roster needs.
It’s been seven years since the New York Giants traded wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns. Odell is now a very different version of himself, a 33-year-old player who was out of the NFL in 2025 and hasn’t had a 1,000-yard season since 2019.
But after a shiny participation in the Fanatics Flag Football Classic in Los Angeles earlier this year, Beckham made some waves about a potential NFL return.
It’s hard to see a scenario where that move actually makes sense for the Giants at this point, but head coach John Harbaugh revealed it’s on the table.
“Talked to Odell a lot, probably three of four times in the last week, [see] where he’s at, where we’re at,” Harbaugh said last week. “He’s in Arizona right now training and spending time with his son. The goal for right now is for him to train and get as ready as he can be. And then we’ll see where we’re at at that time.”
Odell’s physical situation is a question mark
Beckham had an amazing start to his NFL career for the Giants, but a sequence of injuries affected him to a high degree — especially knee issues. So while Odell is healthy now, the pains of a full training camp and regular season may be too much for him. And that’s what Harbaugh wants to know before making a move.
“We have just such an honest conversation about it. It’s got to be right for both parties,” Harbaugh added. “Odell wants to be the kind of player that can make a difference. I’m pretty sure that he can make a team in the National Football League right now. But can he make a difference and is it something he wants to do and is his body going to hold up the way he wants it to? All those things are questions that need to get answered for anybody that age.
That, however, is not the biggest drawback for the Giants from potentially bringing Odell back.
Different timelines
As a 33-year-old player, Odell is obviously far from his prime. Ideally, he could find a role like he did for the Los Angeles Rams back in 2021 — but that was five years ago. At this point, it’s hard to imagine a highly productive player. At a realistic best, he would replicate what he did for the Baltimore Ravens back in 2023, with 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns.
But the Giants are not in position to be a true Super Bowl contender in 2026. So what’s the point of signing a player like Odell? The priority should be developing young receivers like Malik Nabers and rookie Malachi Fields. Perhaps, the idea would be getting a mentor. But that’s probably not a role Odell would want in the first place.
“You know Odell, he’s confident, man,” Harbaugh admitted. “He’s confident, he’s working hard, and he believes in himself. So I think we’ll just play it out over the next month and into training camp and see where we’re at.”
The Giants don’t need a role player with limited ceiling just to take snaps off the younger players. It’s time to invest in the future, and Beckham can’t be that anymore.
