The Miami Dolphins have finally added a fullback to their 2026 roster — but there’s a catch
The Miami Dolphins bid farewell to fullback Alec Ingold this offseason. They’ve added a replacement on the heels of rookie minicamp.
The one spot on the Miami Dolphins‘ 2026 roster that had yet to be addressed at all finally has gotten a little love.
Miami bid farewell to veteran fullback Alec Ingold earlier this offseason. They made the veteran a salary cap casualty amid sweeping changes to the team and football operation. And yet through free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft, there was no sign of a new fullback on the Dolphins’ roster. Until today. Miami has ushered in a new fullback to their ranks. Undrafted rookie DJ Herman was signed on Monday after a tryout at rookie minicamp. But there is a catch.
The Miami Dolphins have signed a fullback to their 2026 offseason roster but there’s a catch

Herman joins the Dolphins’ offseason roster after his college career came to a close as San Diego State. There, he was a teammate to Miami’s first round draft choice, CB Chris Johnson. Ready for the fun part? He was a linebacker.
Herman posted just 27 offensive snaps across his playing career with the Aztecs, which peaked in 2025 with 17 reps. It makes him a total roll of the dice and a shot in the dark for actually filling the fullback role. But Herman does have one thing going for him that could get him into the door with the Dolphins. He’s been a prolific special teams contributor.
Herman played the same (27) or more snaps on special teams in seven of the Aztec’s games this past season as he did on offense for his entire four-year career. In total, Herman posted 959 total snaps as a special teamer for the Aztecs. Undrafted rookies and marginal role players need to be able to have success in this phase of the game to justify dressing on Sundays. And Herman has that part of his game well in hand. The question, of course, is if he can get his new role as a fullback to fall in line, too.
