Three wins for De’Von Achane and his camp from their four-year new contract extension with the Miami Dolphins
Contract negotiations are all about finding wins for all parties. Where does De’Von Achane claim his amid his new deal with the Miami Dolphins?
There are a whole lot of details we still need to learn about De’Von Achane‘s contract extension with the Miami Dolphins.
The news broke last night that Achane and the Dolphins franchise had agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension. He is, comfortably, the most dynamic offensive weapon left in Miami — keeping him in-house is a major win for Miami’s competitive outlook . This new extension makes him one of the league’s highest paid running backs. But where else did his camp secure wins in negotiations? Here are three ways in which De’Von Achane’s camp secured wins for the fourth-year running back.
Three wins for Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane in his new contract extension with the team

1. Total value of contract clocking in at $64 million (technically)
De’Von Achane’s deal with worth a maximum value of $68 million, although it has been reported that $4 million of that total value comes down to incentives. That leaves $64 million in total value committed to on the contract. While non-guaranteed money is a footnote in an NFL contract, it’s still relevant. And it can be work bragging rights, too.
De’Von Achane’s deal being worth $64 million in total value makes it the highest commitment in total money to a running back on an active contract. Rookie running back Jeremiyah Love’s $53 million in total value held the record for a hot second; he signed his deal last week. The previous high for a non-rookie contract belonged to Josh Jacobs (Green Bay) and was tied by Travis Etienne and the New Orleans Saints earlier this offseason ($48 million total value).
2. Guaranteed money north of $30 million ($32 million, to be exact)
The list of veteran running backs to receive north of $30 million in guarantees is just two players long. Saquon Barkley had $36 million of $41.6 million guaranteed on his extension last offseason. And now, De’Von Achane. That’s it! That’s the list.
Rookies Jeremiyah Love and Ashton Jeanty landed north of $30 million thanks to fully-guaranteed rookie contracts.
But veterans have been pressed up against this ceiling for a while, with Breece Hall ($29 million), Kenneth Walker ($28.7 million), Derrick Henry ($25 million), Travis Etienne ($24 Million) all securing extensions in the last year that failed to push north of $30 million in guarantees.
3. Record-setting numbers for a running back coming off a rookie deal
A lot of the top dogs in the running back market got here the long way. Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey both logged rapid re-ups on new deals that landed them lofty dollars and top marks at the position.
This was notable reporting from the original report from Jordan Schultz about the deal. The guarantees and the annual average were records for a running back “coming off a rookie contract”.
