We’ve got a minute before football starts again for the Detroit Lions. Now is the time to take a deeper look at things and think about the future a little.

In doing that, I was looking at the Lions’ salary cap table, and I couldn’t help but notice that the Lions have an interesting situation at one position that could set them up for a total reset in 2027.

The Lions have no tight ends signed beyond 2026

Let’s start here. The expectation is that Sam LaPorta will be signed to a deal at some point. Is that going to be an extension this offseason, or is it going to be a free agency thing next offseason?

That is going to be the biggest question for this team going forward. Because if it’s not the offseason, it turns into a situation where now the Lions are clearly waiting to see if his back holds up. If it doesn’t, then the Lions are going to be in the market for their next tight end. If they do get it done this offseason, well then, you at least have a good level of confidence that they have a good level of confidence that his back is going to be just fine.

Beyond that, Tylery Conklin, Brock Wright, Zach Horton. Miles Kitselman, and Thomas Gordan are all slated to become free agents after this coming season. So even if the Lions do wind up signing LaPorta, they still have to do a near reset at tight end after this season.

So, I guess doing the Babe Ruth move and calling my shot by guaranteeing the Lions draft a tight end next year wouldn’t be the craziest move I’ve ever made. It certainly looks like it’s going to be something that needs to get done.
