When the Pittsburgh Steelers used the 76th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Drew Allar, they knew they were selecting a project. It’s why many deemed the pick “a reach,” given that a round three pick and especially the 7th overall pick, is viewed as valuable capital.

Pittsburgh took on the task nonetheless. But similar to buying a new car, you don’t really know what’s under the hood until it’s yours. Well, the Steelers received their first exposure to Allar during rookie minicamp, and it’s clear that they have to start from the ground up.

Steelers reteaching the QB position to Allar

If you watched even a second of Allar at Penn State, this probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise. While the wow moments were evident…tight window throws, effortless arm talent, the ability to make plays out of structure, etc, the fundamentals were in dire straits.

Sloppy footwork, a poor base, a lack of rotational force that didn’t sync his lower body with his hips and arm, this is someone who could actually benefit from tearing it down and building it back up again.

How sitting behind Aaron Rodgers can help Drew Allar

And when you have Aaron Rodgers on the roster, you can do that. You know that for at least 2026, Allar will be sitting behind Rodgers, learning from him, and learning from the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff when it comes to his fundamentals.

His spot is safe, the same way that Aaron Rodgers’ is. The battle for the backup position will come down to Will Howard and Mason Rudolph. It will be one of the biggest storylines at OTAs when they kick off this week, and it will bleed into the summer months and, of course, when training camp begins.

So for Allar, it’s about soaking up all the knowledge he can. Doing his best to be attentive every day and using every second to learn from one of the best to ever do it. This isn’t a short-term plan from the Pittsburgh Steelers; it’s a long play, and one they hope will pay off.
