Tennessee Vols true freshman wide receiver Tristen Keys will face high expectations on Rocky Top.

Keys, 6-foot-2/195 pounds from Hattiesburg, MS, was rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 wide receiver in the 2026 recruiting class.

The Vols landed Keys after flipping him from the LSU Tigers (Keys was committed to LSU for five months before flipping to Tennessee).

Keys has the talent to be a first round draft pick in a couple of years. But first he has to prove that he’s a complete wide receiver at the college level.

Anonymous source says Tennessee Vols WR Tristen Keys is going to be special

CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer spoke to some anonymous Tennessee sources this week about Keys and came away with some interesting information.

Hummer noted that Tennessee sources view Keys as a “high-level talent” who has the potential to make an instant impact this fall.

“The top-ranked wide receiver in the 2026 class is viewed by Tennessee sources as a high-level talent with the capability to make an instant impact,” wrote Hummer. “It’s even possible he could end up being an immediate starter for the Vols.”

Hummer also included a quote from one of the sources he spoke with.

He’s going to be special,” said the source to CBS Sports. “He’s different.”

That’s certainly encouraging for Vols fans to hear after Keys was heavily criticized earlier this spring for an out-of-context clip that showed him going through drills at half speed.

Those comments, though, shouldn’t come as a surprise after hearing what Vols wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope said about Keys in late March.

“From a readiness standpoint and a preparation standpoint, he’s been as good of a freshman as I’ve been around,” said Pope. “He’s competitive, he cares, he’s a sponge, he wants to go over the little things.”

Keys is battling second-year receivers Travis Smith, Radarious Jackson, and Joakim Dodson, as well as fellow true freshman Tyreek King, for Tennessee’s No. 3 wide receiver job. That role appears to be wide open as we enter the summer months.
