Fans might be talking about the wrong Cleveland Browns quarterback who could be traded before the season gets here

Cleveland Browns have quite a bit to work through before the 2026 NFL season. There’s been plenty of talk about Dillon Gabriel being the odd man out, but it might actually be another name the Browns move off of.

The talk of the town for the Cleveland Browns is going to be around the quarterback position for the next couple of months. Mandatory minicamp will take place in June, and the Browns could come out of it with a starting quarterback named.

Cleveland has Deshaun Watson back and healthy as the most likely option to start the season behind center. Second-year quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are joined by rookie sixth-round pick Taylen Green.

With Green being added in the draft, four quarterbacks are vying for three spots. Gabriel is the most talked-about QB as the odd man out, but it could end up working out in a surprising way.

Don’t rule out a Shedeur Sanders trade for the Cleveland Browns

Gabriel was the third round pick a year ago while Sanders was the fifth round pick. However, Gabriel ended up starting six compared to the seven starts Sanders made. Sanders looked like the better quarterback as a rookie and elevated the offense more. But he also turned the football over more with 10 interceptions compared to the two Gabriel had. It’s not out of the realm that the Browns look to flip Sanders for a pick, instead of moving off of Gabriel.

Todd Monken in Cleveland means there’s an entirely new system for all the quarterbacks to learn. The early return is that Sanders is fighting for the starting job and QB2 at worst, but that’s just how things currently stand. Cleveland can make the decision that Sanders isn’t a player who is going to be in the picture long term, and they could opt to move off of him as a result.

Sanders is more likely to net a return in terms of a Day 3 draft pick than Gabriel is. Gabriel projects as a backup at best and lacks the ideal size to be a franchise quarterback. Sanders at least brings the tools to be a long-term guy, even if he doesn’t end up being one.

Browns’ QB room still has a lot to play out

It’s Cleveland after all and the most important position in the game is one the team hasn’t been able to figure out long term in decades. The depth chart could end up changing between now and training camp. Green showing he should be in the picture is another part of this. The Browns drafted the athletic freak for a reason and he’s going to be on the team in 2026. It’s known that the third QB spot on the roster comes down to Sanders or Gabriel with Watson and Green locked in for the fall.

Not to say the Browns are going to trade Sanders, but the possibility is there. The Browns have often given us the surprise move from what we actually think they’re going to do. Moving Sanders before the season isn’t out of the realm of possibilities, even if there’s part of the fanbase that doesn’t want to hear it.
