Steelers could draft their quarterback of the future in a matter of weeks following latest college football and NFL Draft news

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback room may be overflowing, but if things fall a certain way this summer, another name could soon be added to the roster.

The Pittsburgh Steelers seemingly have enough QB issues on their hands. Aaron Rodgers is back for what he’s said will be the final season of his career.

Behind him lies what the Steelers believe is a diamond in the rough via Drew Allar, and in between, is a quarterback battle between Mason Rudolph and Will Howard. But what if a fifth name were suddenly thrust into the mix? What would happen then? It’s a scenario that the Steelers may have to consider come the summer.

Who is Brendan Sorsby

If you’re unfamiliar with former Indiana and Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby, let me fill you in. Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech this offseason and is widely regarded as one of the top prospects in the 2027 NFL Draft.

However, Sorsby is alleged to have placed over 10,000 bets during his collegiate career and is currently suspended indefinitely due to sports gambling. He’s hired legal counsel in an effort to restore his eligibility, but there are pessimistic feelings surrounding that outcome.

So, Sorsby could turn to the rarely used supplemental draft. He will have to make a decision by the end of June, or risk sitting out the season and declaring for next year’s NFL Draft. A to Z Sports spoke to sources about Sorsby’s situation and where the Steelers fall in all of this.

Brendan Sorsby 2025 stats

  • 2,800 passing yards, 580 rushing yards.
  • 36 total touchdowns.
  • 155.1 passer rating, 81.5 QBR.

Would the Steelers consider Brendan Sorsby?

“One of the wildest situations we have ever seen at the quarterback issue. He doesn’t have actual character concerns. The only issue would be gambling issues and gambling on his own teams. He clearly has an issue.”

“If Brendan Sorsby were in the 2026 draft, he would have been the 21st pick at worst. He was going to be a first-rounder, and the Steelers liked him a lot. Everyone in the portal wanted this guy, and the league loved him.”

“From a mental standpoint, it would be tough for him to deal with what’s going to come in college. They will fight it because they have to. The plan is to take a shot at college, but I doubt it will work. The only thing they can hope for is a reduced suspension.”

“He’s a projected first-rounder coming in. No way he gets out of the second round in the supplemental draft. Arizona would make a ton of sense, but other teams, including the Steelers, loved him pre-draft.”

Final word

It feels like a foregone conclusion that Sorsby wouldn’t have gotten past Pittsburgh if he were in the 2026 NFL Draft. While that room may already be overflowing, if the supplemental draft becomes a reality and he falls to the Steelers’ selection, I would imagine Pittsburgh’s brass takes a long look at Sorsby.
