Wednesday was the first time that the media got a chance to see both Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy on the field for the Minnesota Vikings this offseason. It was the official start to the quarterback competition for the Vikings.

We will see a lot more from both quarterbacks over the next few months with a lot of talking points about both players. Wednesday was the only time they will get to make a first impression ahead of the 2026 season, and it was especially important for Murray, who spoke with the beat in person for the first time.

One of the first questions that Murray was asked was about his relationship with McCarthy. He gave a great veteran answer.

“It’s been great. Obviously, I know he’s a younger guy, so any way I can help him. I’ve played seven years now, going on eight, so I’m considered a veteran, even though I don’t see myself as that. I’ll give him any knowledge that he needs. Again, we’re both competitors, and I know you know we both want what’s best for the team.”

It’s a savvy answer from Murray, who is on just his second team in his NFL career. He knows exactly what to say and how to say it. The only way this answer is a big deal is if Murray says something that is derogatory or inflammatory toward McCarthy. Murray instead acted like the eight year vet he is.

What we didn’t get was the same from McCarthy. He was essentially asked how he feels about Murray being in Minnesota multiple times and he was a little more snarky.

“It’s just like two guys in a classroom, you know, he sits on one side, I sit on the other side, and it’s the coach’s responsibility to teach us and coach us.”

A pretty stark difference between the two individuals, but it’s somewhat to be expected. Murray is a longtime NFL veteran, while McCarthy is entering his third season at just 23 years old. That difference could be the biggest factor in head coach Kevin O’Connell’s decision.
