Former Vols coach says Chaz Coleman has been dismissed from the Tennessee football program
A former Tennessee Volunteers coach says Penn State transfer EDGE Chaz Coleman has been dismissed from the UT football program after missing various team activities and most of spring practice.
A former Tennessee Vols coach said on Sunday that sophomore EDGE Chaz Coleman has been dismissed from the team after missing most of spring practice while dealing with personal issues.
Former Vols assistant coach Doug Matthews made the revelation on Sunday on 104.5 The Zone’s Big Orange Sunday.
“Chaz Coleman, a young man who came in out of the transfer portal from Penn State,” said Matthews. “A talented player, but young and inexperienced. But he really was being counted on probably to be a starter at EDGE rusher, I would think. [He’s] no longer with the program. I think it’s probably pretty mutual, but he was dismissed this past week after I think about as good an effort as Coach (Josh) Heupel and this staff could have [made] to keep him there. It didn’t work out. Those things happen.”
One positive for the Vols in this situation is that Tennessee reportedly reworked Coleman’s deal, so there wasn’t a significant amount of money paid up front.
Unless Coleman finds a loophole, and that’s always possible in this era of college football, he won’t be eligible to play for another program this fall.
Matthews’ report hasn’t been confirmed by any other outlets, but we’ll update this article with any new information that surfaces.
Coleman, who played under new Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Knowles at Penn State last season, was one of the Vols’ highest-profile transfer additions this offseason. Tennessee landed Coleman over Ohio State.
Update (3:35 PM ET 5/31/26):
There is still no confirmation on Coleman’s official status at Tennessee beyond Matthews’ report on Sunday.
