‘He doesn’t anybody advocating for him like Boo Carter did’ – Latest Chaz Coleman update makes the situation even more confusing

Tennessee Vols EDGE Chaz Coleman reportedly returned to Knoxville late last month, but no one is quite sure what that means.

Coleman, who transferred from Penn State to Tennessee in January, hasn’t been working out with the team since his return. He’s essentially picked up where he left off when he missed most of spring practice.

Vols insider shares the latest update on Chaz Coleman

With Tennessee fans clamoring for updates, VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Friday and shared the latest on Coleman.

Hubbs noted that Coleman still isn’t participating in workouts, but he’s still technically part of the program.

Some fans have compared the situation to the Boo Carter saga that went down last summer. Hubbs, however, explained that it’s different because Tennessee’s players have never really viewed Coleman as part of the team (because he hasn’t been around). So no one is advocating for Carter the way some Vols players did last summer.

“I don’t know that there’s a timeline for getting final closure on things (with Coleman),” said Hubbs. “I mean, it could happen later this afternoon, I guess, but I don’t have anybody telling me [that news on Coleman will come] next week or next Tuesday or anything like that. But there’s also no one [saying] there’s a chance he could be back. He’s not doing anything with his teammates. He’s not been a participant in anything.

“He’s been in town, but he hasn’t done anything, and I think that’s important to note. Because I know a lot of fans are trying to compare this to the Boo Carter situation. This is not an issue where it’s a problem with teammates — because he just hasn’t been around. And so he doesn’t have great rapport and great relationships with teammates in the locker room. He doesn’t really have anybody advocating for him like Boo Carter did. Not everybody [advocated] for Boo Carter, but there were some who were advocating and trying to help Boo Carter. Chaz doesn’t have that rapport with anybody. And that changes the dynamics for the impact of it this summer. It has no impact on this current team.”

This is such a strange situation. It feels like everyone — fans, media, players, etc — are just waiting for official word that Coleman is no longer part of the program. It’s hard to imagine this situation playing out any other way. The fact that Coleman missed a whole spring of very important workouts with new strength coach Derek Owings probably means he has no chance to be a productive player for the Vols this fall even if he wanted to at this point.

So what’s the hold up? Why has Coleman been in Knoxville for a week if he’s not trying to be part of the team? Why haven’t the two sides parted ways yet?

I’m sure we’ll get those answers in due time. But for now, this continues to be one of the more bizarre personnel situations we’ve ever seen in college football.
