Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby has been the subject of a lot of speculation in recent weeks. Amid checking in to a rehab facility due to a gambling addiction, Sorsby has been presumed to be headed to the NFL’s Supplemental Draft.

But quarterback hungry teams in the NFL just saw their Hail Mary hopes of an upgrade behind center dashed. Because, in a stunning turn, Sorsby has been given the green light to play this season thanks to a granted injuction.

If this feels like a massive upset, it should. Sorsby’s gambling track record has generally been considered a kiss of death for a playing career. Instead, Sorsby has been granted the green light to play this season thanks to the judge’s ruling — although the news does come with some fine print. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Sorsby is scheduled to serve a two-game suspension as a part of the ruling.

It is, essentially, a slap on the wrist. Sorsby will miss games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State before returning to the lineup in a bid to get the Red Raiders over the hump. And, from an NFL perspective, he’ll need to rehab his image and smooth over the rough areas of his game.

But he’ll now get the 2026 season to do so, which just days ago felt like a long-shot. It’s a great outcome for the quarterback. And a tough one for quarterback hungry teams staring down the dog days of summer with uncertainty behind center. This would have been a prime opportunity to score a talented (but risky) signal caller, potentially at a discount. Instead, in a stunning turn, he’s back in the player pool for next spring. All good things to those who wait, I suppose.
