The Dallas Cowboys remain a strong trade candidate for All-Pro defender, and it makes sense for everyone
The Dallas Cowboys are much improved on defense. But there’s a trade scenario out there that still makes too much sense, and one NFL national writer is bringing it back into the fold.
This isn’t a new idea to anyone, but there’s still a trade scenario out there that makes too much sense for the Dallas Cowboys. It would land the Cowboys some much-needed depth at linebacker and it would give an AFC team another chance to load up on future draft capital.
So naturally, it’s still a scenario on a lot of people’s minds. That includes FOX Sports’ Greg Auman.
Cowboys named top landing spot for LB Jordyn Brooks
In an article listing the Top 5 trade candidates at this stage of the NFL offseason, Auman listed Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks. And his top landing spot for him? The Cowboys.
“He’s in the final year of his contract, making a reasonable $8 million,” Auman wrote. “It’s possible Miami wants to keep him as one key piece, but it should be active enough in 2027 free agency that it won’t be able to get a compensatory pick for losing him.”
On Miami’s side, it makes a lot of sense. The Dolphins’ offseason has been all about gearing up for the future, letting go of players such as QB Tua Tagovailoa, WR Jaylen Waddle, WR Tyreek Hill, and EDGE Bradley Chubb.
Dealing another standout veteran would be on par with their team-building strategy this offseason.
“If it doesn’t happen before the season, it feels inevitable he lands with a contender at the trade deadline,” Auman added.
Why Jordyn Brooks makes sense for the Cowboys
I don’t think I have to convince anyone when I say the Cowboys could use more linebacker help. By the way, the Cowboys were reported to have discussed a trade for Brooks earlier in the offseason.
The coaching staff is confident in DeMarvion Overshown, Dee Winters, Shemar James, and even rookie Jaishawn Barham spearheading the position. But depth is a serious question, especially considering Overshown’s extensive injury history.
Brooks is fresh off of a first-team All-Pro season after leading the NFL in tackles with 183. The author of 13 tackles for loss, Brooks is a difference-maker on the second level. The Cowboys could get him at a discount if Miami is indeed open to dealing him.
The only question right now is if the Cowboys are willing to give up trade capital for him. Earlier in the offseason, the front office suggested it wanted to keep its picks in 2027. As of today, they hold only five picks in next year’s draft (but they do own picks in each of the first three rounds). Realistically, the Cowboys would have to give up their third for Brooks and perhaps some change.
