Steelers will officially have to wait on polarizing quarterback prospect following landmark ruling in college football gambling

Sources told A to Z Sports weeks ago that the Steelers were a team to watch if and when Brendan Sorsby entered the supplemental draft. Well, following one of the most surprising rulings in the history of college football, that ship has officially sailed.

The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ quarterback room is overflowing right now. When the Steelers return from summer break, training camp will be here, and there will be a battle between Mason Rudolph and Will Howard to determine who will be QB No.2 on the roster.

But there was a world where the Steelers added another name this summer. That would have been quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who was not only on the Steelers’ radar but high on their board, as sources told A to Z Sports. Well, if the Steelers still want Sorsby, they will have to wait until next April, following some groundbreaking news.

Brendan Sorsby has NCAA eligibility restored for the 2026 season

“A judge in district court in Lubbock County, Texas, has granted the injunction requested by Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby. He’s set to be eligible for the 2026 season. Sorsby cannot play in Texas Tech’s first two games, which was the penalty his legal team suggested to the NCAA.” – ESPN

If you’re unfamiliar with former Indiana and Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby, let me fill you in. Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech this offseason and is widely regarded as one of the top prospects in the 2027 NFL Draft.

However, Sorsby is alleged to have placed over 10,000 bets during his collegiate career and was suspended indefinitely due to sports gambling. He hired legal counsel in an effort to restore his eligibility, and while there was pessimism about his collegiate future, Sorsby has won out and was granted an injunction to play in 2026.

Would the Steelers consider Brendan Sorsby in the 2027 NFL Draft?

Sorsby is widely believed to be a first-round prospect in the 2027 NFL Draft, and there was an argument to be made that if he had entered the 2026 NFL Draft, he wouldn’t have made it out of Round 1, or pick 21 in particular.

“If Brendan Sorsby were in the 2026 draft, he would have been the 21st pick at worst,” a source told A to Z Sports. “He was going to be a first-rounder, and the Steelers liked him a lot. Everyone in the portal wanted this guy, and the league loved him.”

Sorsby now has a whole year to improve his quarterback skills and show that he’s gotten over his gambling issues. If both of those prove true, I’d bet he’s a first-rounder once again.
