Texas Longhorns fans just saw a message from a key player they were hoping to never see
Texas Longhorns fans — and the Texas coaching staff — woke up to a message on Friday morning from a key 2027 football five-star commit that they were hoping to never see.
One of the Texas Longhorns’ biggest wins over the last six months came in late November when Steve Sarkisian landed a commitment from 2027 five-star wide receiver Easton Royal.
Royal, 5-foot-11/200 pounds from New Orleans, LA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 6 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class.
Based on the recruiting ranking, Royal has the talent to be a future Pro-Bowl-caliber wide receiver in the NFL. He has the ability to be a true difference maker as a true freshman in the SEC. It was a huge win for the Longhorns.
But some tweets that Royal sent on Thursday evening have Texas fans very nervous that he won’t make it to Austin.
Easton Royal appears to be having a grand time on his visit to Florida
Other programs have continued to recruit Royal over the last several months.
Florida and LSU have emerged as the biggest threats to swipe Royal from the Longhorns.
And Florida, specifically, looks like they could be on the verge of flipping the five-star wide receiver.
Royal is in Gainesville this week for a visit and he appears to be having quite the time based on the tweets he sent on Thursday evening.
The “I can get used to this” and “I’m loving it a lot” comments from Royal are particularly telling.
Nothing will be final in this recruiting battle until Royal signs with a program in December, so this battle will continue for another six months regardless of what happens or is said this weekend. We’re in an era of college football where stuff like this could just be a leverage play to get a more lucrative NIL deal from Texas.
We’ll see what happens, but it’s understandable if Texas fans are feeling a little uneasy after waking up on Friday to those tweets from Royal.
