The Kansas City Chiefs did what every team hopes to do, but only a few have done. They were able to draft a generational quarterback. There’s only been a handful of those guys in the sport’s history. There have been even fewer times when those generational guys won more than one Super Bowl.

Patrick Mahomes is already one of the three greatest players to ever play this game. Of course, depending on who you ask, he may be No. 1. But when did the Chiefs know Mahomes would be what he is? When did reality set in that they had their guy, a guy who could take them to not just one Super Bowl, but five, and win three of them? One of his former offensive line starters in 2018 knew almost right away.

Former Chiefs C Mitch Morse knew Patrick Mahomes was special

“What I also remember that year, specifically, was Patrick Mahomes becoming Patrick Mahomes,” former Chiefs center Mitch Morse said on Good Morning Football. “That was 2018, the first year he started. Came out against the Los Angeles Chargers, and then the next week scored six touchdowns against the Pittsburgh Steelers. We were all holding our breath to see if it would end. It didn’t.

“He became the MVP in his first year out. We were just along for the ride. That, in particular, was a special season. I would go back to that Week 2 game in Pittsburgh. He threw for six TDs, and they came back to see his competitive poise in the infancy of his career was profound. You see those guys that have that killer charisma, he’s had that from the jump.”

Now that we’re all awaiting the start of training camp, Mahomes is nearing the start of his 10th season. That sounds pretty insane to say out loud, but it’s been an amazing ten years watching probably the most talented player ever to play the position. Mahomes is currently recovering from his knee injury, but should be on track to play Week 1.
