Through three weeks of the Canadian Football League season, we have a whopping 10 games in the book, and all nine teams have played at least two games. In an 18-game season, it’s too early to make any drastic conclusions. Even so, we have a good baseline to start making projections on how the rest of the season will turn out.

In Week 4, we have the first four-day slate, kicking in off in Winnipeg and finishing in Montreal. Here’s what I’m keeping an eye on in Week 4.

Week 4 schedule

  • Thursday, June 25th: Edmonton Elks vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers
  • Friday, June 26th: Toronto Argonauts vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders
  • Saturday, June 27th: Calgary Stampeders vs. BC Lions (in Kelowna, British Columbia)
  • Sunday, June 28th: Ottawa Redblacks vs. Montreal Alouettes

Edmonton Elks can make a huge statement

After starting off a paltry 1-7 last year, the Edmonton Elks are 2-0 for the first time since 2019. That was also the last year Alouettes head coach Jason Maas was at the helm in Edmonton.

This year, the Elks are 2-0, including a walkoff win against Montreal on Saturday afternoon. The one common denominator in both games the Elks have played? A massive rainstorm occurred.

We’ve seen Cody Fajardo play two solid games, anchored by a good offensive line and star running back Justin Rankin, but there has been something to be desired with the consistency they have displayed.

Now, the Blue Bombers are coming off a tough loss where the secondary got torched, mainly due to the pass rush not getting to Bo Levi Mitchell. Will that change against Edmonton? The Elks going into Princess Auto Stadium and getting a win will continue their impressive momentum and solidify a stronghold at the top of the West Division ahead of their first meeting with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 23rd.

Standing in their way is quarterback Zach Collaros, who is no stranger to difficult games. He has looked good so far this year, but will the wheels fall off? The zip on his arm just isn’t there like it used to be.

Will Chad Kelly beat a top team?

We are two games into the return of Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly, and it’s been successful for the Argonauts. In both games, Kelly has been a dynamite player, throwing for back-to-back 400+ yard passing games for the first time in Argos history since Damon Allen in 2005. 869 yards and seven touchdowns is pretty impressive. However, five interceptions is not.

The Roughriders have won both games, but have done so by the skin of their teeth with three-point wins over the BC Lions and Calgary Stampeders. Quarterback Trevor Harris is my early pick for Most Outstanding Player, and has the Roughriders offense operating at a high level, with the receiver trio of Samuel Emilus, Kian Schaffer-Baker, and KeeSean Johnson.

Defensively, the Roughriders don’t look near as dominant as they were in 2025, and that could be where Kelly shines. They need to get wins now, as they won’t be playing at home for at least another five weeks.

Can the BC Lions weather the storm?

The BC Lions are in dire straits already. They have seen five of their top six wide receivers suffer injuries, including Keon Hatcher missing Friday’s game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Luckily, 2026 fifth-round CFL Draft pick Nick Cenacle from Hawaii stepped up in a big way with two touchdowns.

Even so, the Lions are 0-2 and in danger of going 0-3 against fellow 0-2 squad, Calgary Stampeders. They have lost both of their games on walk-off scores at home, but their star defensive line is getting healthy, as Jaylon Hutchings returned against the Roughriders.

In the first game played in Kelowna, British Columbia, both teams are desperate for a win, especially the Lions, who had strong Grey Cup aspirations going into the season. A third loss to start the year could be massive for both teams, even with a possible crossover playoff spot.

Other things to watch

  • Will Ryan Dinwiddie make a change at quarterback for the Ottawa Redblacks? It won’t be Dru Brown, as he was traded to the Blue Bombers for a 2027 first-round pick and 2028 second-round pick. Maier isn’t the guy, but they don’t have anyone left to contend with Maier after the trade, as Dustin Crum is now in Montreal.
  • The Winnipeg Blue Bombers need a bounce-back game after a 10-point home loss to the Ti-Cats. The key for them will be establishing a pass rush, which disappeared in their loss after being a dominant force in their Week 1 win over the Stampeders.
  • Montreal Alouettes quarterback Davis Alexander has lost his first regular-season game, dropping his record to 13-1. Now, he can focus on just playing football, and it likely starts with a massive game against the Redblacks.
