Quarterback Geno Smith’s legal situation adds an extra layer to Titans vs Jets Week 1 NFL opener
The Tennessee Titans’ season-opener against the New York Jets was already rich with storylines, but another layer was added on Tuesday with quarterback Geno Smith’s legal situation.
The Tennessee Titans’ matchup against the New York Jets in Week One of the 2026 NFL season was already loaded with storylines, but another layer was added this week.
Jets quarterback Geno Smith is being investigated in Florida for an incident in which a woman accused him of battery (police initially said the case was not under active investigation).
Police were dispatched to Smith’s home on Sunday after a woman, who claimed to be his ex-girlfriend, called 911 and said she was assaulted by the veteran quarterback.
A video of the dispute was posted online.
“We were informed [Monday] evening that, during review, it was determined that this case is being further investigated by detectives. It is active and we cannot release any additional information at this time,” said a police spokesman to ESPN.
The mother of Smith’s son defended the Jets quarterback in an Instagram story on Sunday, writing “Geno is and always has been more than capable of taking care of his son, let’s kill that narrative. Don’t get on the internet bringing my son into your web of dysfunction.”
It’s far too early in the investigation to know if Smith’s status for the Week 1 matchup against the Titans will be impacted.
Titans vs Jets was already loaded with storylines
The Titans vs Jets may seem like an under-the-radar matchup from a national standpoint for both teams, but it’s loaded with storylines.
For starters, Robert Saleh’s first regular season game as the head coach of the Titans will come against a Jets franchise where he was the head coach from 2021 to 2024.
Saleh was fired five games into his fourth season with the Jets.
Additionally, there are several Titans players who previously played for the Jets, including defensive end Jermaine Johnson, defensive tackle John Franklin-Myers, and safety Tony Adams, who all played for the Jets during Saleh’s time as the franchise’s head coach.
Jets defensive lineman T’Vondre Sweat landed in New York when he was included in the trade that sent Johnson to the Titans, so there will be a little extra motivation on both sides of the ball when New York and Tennessee face off on September 13 in Nashville.
