The Baltimore Ravens were not one of the teams across the NFL who were immune to change this offseason.

The dismissal of head coach John Harbaugh brought seismic changes to the organization. The perception was that those changes were overdue. But the Ravens organization kept the other powerful figure in Baltimore in place. General manager Eric DeCosta continues to run the football operation — and now, some of his most essential personnel are carrying new titles. The Ravens announced a series of promotions within their front office on Tuesday.

Each one of the roles that Baltimore has announced is, obviously, an important one. The sports science wing is seeing major changes, for example. So, too, are the directors of college scouting and pro personnel roles. Those are pretty high up on the ladder for DeCosta in the football operations department.

But no change is bigger than the one for Nick Matteo, who was previously titled as Baltimore’s Vice President of Football Administration. He now carries the “Vice President of Football Operations” title. It’s one of the most high-ranking recognized titles in all of football. And, per a quote from DeCosta in the release, it’s a promotion well-earned.

“Nick excels as our primary contract negotiator and salary cap manager. He’s ready for an expanded new role where he will also coordinate operations with the video, equipment and player engagement departments on the football side. I’m confident he will thrive. Congrats to Nick,” said DeCosta via Ravens.com.
