The Texas Longhorns added another key piece to their 2027 recruiting class by landing four-star cornerback Montre Jackson.

The 6’1, 185-pound defensive back chose Texas over SMU, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma, giving the Longhorns a second cornerback commitment alongside five-star John Meredith. Jackson is a top-175 player nationally, the No. 22 cornerback in the country, and the No. 27 prospect in the state of Texas.

“To that young kid with dreams, it’s possible,” Jackson said on his commitment post.

What Jackson brings to Texas

Jackson’s skill set fits what Texas wants to do defensively. He brings a press-man style of play, with the ability to disrupt receivers at the line of scrimmage, and he can also hold his own in zone coverage. That versatility makes him a valuable addition to a secondary that is already stacking talent.

The fact that the Longhorns won this recruitment over Oklahoma makes it even sweeter. The Sooners were high on Jackson throughout the process, and pulling him away from a rival adds another layer to this commitment. Winning battles like this one against SEC and Big 12 competition is what separates good classes from great ones.

Texas’ 2027 class continues to climb

With Jackson on board, the Longhorns now hold the No. 5-ranked class in the country and the No. 3 class in the SEC, carrying a 91.50 composite score. Texas has 20 total commits, including two five-stars and 12 four-stars. This class is shaping up to be elite on the defensive side of the ball.

But the Longhorns are not done at cornerback. They still want at least one more, and there are a few names to watch. Texas likes Joshua Dobson, though he appears to be down to Texas A&M and South Carolina. Rasheem Floyd is another target, but he may end up choosing Florida or Missouri. Then there is Jacob Whitehead, who is currently trending toward the Longhorns over Miami.

The bigger picture

Texas is doing exactly what it needs to do right now in this recruiting cycle. The staff is targeting specific positions of need and closing on them. Adding Jackson alongside Meredith gives the Longhorns two cornerbacks with different skill sets who can contribute to the secondary’s future. If Whitehead ends up committing as well, this defensive back haul could be one of the best in the country.

The Longhorns still have work to do, but the foundation of this class is strong. That next cornerback commitment looks like it could arrive soon.
