Tennessee Vols wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope has been on a recruiting heater the last couple of years, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

In fact, the only thing that’s kept Pope from landing more elite talent than he already has is the fact that there are only so many wide receivers Tennessee can sign (and pay).

The Vols were in the mix for a couple of the top wide receivers in the 2027 recruiting class — Easton Royal and Eric McFarland — but Tennessee essentially had to bow out because they weren’t in a position to be as aggressive as other programs due to the young talent already on UT’s roster.

Pope and the Vols, however, could be big players in the 2028 recruiting class — which is why it’s not a surprise that Tennessee is one of the early programs in the mix for 2028 five-star wide receiver Lorenzo McMullen Jr.

McMullen, 6-foot-1/170 pounds from Cincinnati, OH, is rated by Rivals as the No. 4 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 11 overall player in the 2028 recruiting class. He’s also rated as the No. 1 player in the state of Ohio.

The five-star recruit told On3 this week that Tennessee is one of the programs that he’s interested in visiting this fall.

“As of right now I have no dates finalized but I plan on going a lot of places,” said McMullen. “Tennessee for sure, Texas, Ohio State, Michigan really all the big ones.”

It’s still very early in McMullen’s recruitment, so we’ll see where things go, but if Pope and the Vols decide to be aggressive in pursuing the Ohio native, then Tennessee will likely be one of the teams to beat in this recruiting battle.
