The Giants managed to create another headache for Tony Vitello with some nonsense that he now has to deal with
Former Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello is learning just how tough life in MLB can be on the field and off the field.
It feels like it’s something new every day that former Tennessee coach Tony Vitello is having to deal with in his first season as the manager of the San Francisco Giants.
The Giants have been one of the worst teams in the league on the field this season, and they’ve dealt with a couple of controversies off the field.
Another “controversy” popped up this week when Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb lost his mind on Twitter and went after fans and media members following San Francisco’s 10-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.
Vitello, who is typically willing to discuss anything and everything, was asked about Webb’s meltdown on Thursday during an appearance on KNBR.
Instead of being his normal candid self, Vitello pled the Fifth and claimed he didn’t know anything about Webb’s social media shenanigans.
“Honestly, I don’t know anything about it,” said Vitello. “And kind of like some of that other stuff earlier on, I’m not educated enough to speak intelligently on some of those things, which I think is a good thing. Maybe he came from a place where he felt like he was defending the team or himself. Again, I honestly don’t know anything about it.”
“My immediate reaction was that it comes from [his] competitiveness,” added Vitello. “I mean, the first time I met him, you can tell he’s got a fire burning inside of him, and that fire’s probably not going out until he retires. It’ll probably be a couple years after that — it’ll still be lingering. So, I can’t speak for him, but I assume part of it comes from that.”
That’s about as well as Vitello could’ve handled that, but it’s still a reminder for the former Vols coach that there are no “breaks” in MLB. Unlike in college, when most of the action and storylines are happening from Friday to Sunday, it’s an everyday deal in the big leagues — and every day has the potential to deliver a new headache.
