Jim Harbaugh reportedly had his eyes set on adding a different weapon for QB Justin Herbert in the 2025 NFL Draft
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh had his eyes set on a potential reunion in the 2025 NFL Draft that would have heavily benefitted quarterback Justin Herbert before things fell apart.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh has the Los Angeles Chargers on the right track, but there’s still a belief out there that Harbaugh and the Chargers could still do more to surround quarterback Justin Herbert with the elite talent needed to win big games.
The Chargers have some really good offensive players such as wide receivers Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, Tre Harris, and running back Omarion Hampton. The Bolts also added a top offensive mind in Mike McDaniel as OC to get the most out of those players.
But, the biggest “what if” scenario just presented itself for the Chargers that would have changed how people talk about this offense.
TE Colston Loveland thought he was going to be drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers
Ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, tight end Colston Loveland was expecting to be drafted by the Chargers with the No. 22 pick in the first-round. That’s not too much of a surprise given the Michigan connection and Loveland believed the Chargers were the top team interested in adding him.
“That was my only visit I had,” Loveland said on Bussin’ With The Boys. “Coach Harbaugh really told me, he was like ‘if you’re there, we’ll grab you.’”
Ultimately, Loveland was snatched off the board with the 10th overall pick by the Chicago Bears and multiple other teams were watching closely to see if the former Wolverine would drop. The idea of Harbaugh reuniting with his former Michigan player is an intriguing one and both sides were fascinated by the idea.
“We stayed in touch and I told him I was out in L.A. and he’s like ‘let’s try to see each other, unless it’s against the rules,’” Loveland added. “I think it was against the rules pre-draft, which makes sense. Going into that building (on an official visit) was like going back to Michigan. All of the guys were there, strength staff was there, it was really like the boys. No weird tension between us.”
Like many things with the Chargers, the idea of adding a talent like Loveland ended up being nothing more than an idea. Loveland landed in Chicago and had an insanely good season as a rookie, earning a spot among the top tight ends in football.
Herbert would have killed for that kind of guy to throw to in big moments and Harbaugh would have been floored to reunite with another former Wolverine. But, the Chargers still landed a quality weapon in the backfield in Hampton that they are just as excited about.
