The Dallas Cowboys play preseason football this Saturday night when they take on the Seattle Seahawks. But the question is which Cowboys?

We already know head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed starters aren’t expected to play, with a decision pending on first-round rookie defensive back Caleb Downs.

Earlier in training camp, Schottenheimer revealed the Cowboys are breaking down the roster into four large chunks (from A+ to C). Each group is set to play within a range of preseason snaps, starting with none for those in the A+ bucket and unlimited snaps for those who fall at C.

Below is my best guess at which player belongs in what group. But before we dive into the list, here are a couple of notes on the exercise:

• I skipped specialists as the Cowboys only have one kicker (Brandon Aubrey), punter (Bryan Anger) and long snapper (Trent Sieg).
• For simplicity’s sake, I didn’t take injuries into account. After all, this is more about where players stand on the roster rather than predicting final snap counts.

A+: No preseason snaps

It’s not a coincidence the above list sits at 23 players. You have 11 starters on defense and 11 on offense. Excluding Caleb Downs (more on that later), every Cowboys starter is on the list plus KaVontae Turpin (who isn’t a starter on offense but I doubt the Cowboys risk him to injury given his value on special teams). To be fair, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cowboys do get Turpin some reps on offense, but for now I’m listing him here.

Though someone like DeMarvion Overshown could use the snaps, the Cowboys have been overly cautious with him throughout camp. I don’t think that will change in preseason action.

B+: 10-15 preseason snaps

This is the smallest bucket of the four and for good reason. These are players expected to have large roles that for some reason I don’t see playing a lot. Spann-Ford is the Cowboys’ backup tight end but I think he’s done enough to be settled in at TE2. I expect Dallas to use more 12 personnel than many anticipate, so he makes this category.

Shavon Revel Jr. is fighting for a starting role, and it would be valuable for him to work on finishing plays in a gameday setting. Otito Ogbonnia is essentially a starter for the Cowboys when they show base defense looks, and he’s looking like a roster lock.

As for the biggest name on the list, I have Caleb Downs getting a drive or two. I get it, it’s a risk. But I think the Cowboys will ultimately decide they want him to shake off any potential nerves given how important he will be for this defense.

B-: 25-35 preseason snaps

The 10 names above are either roster locks, players who will have a clear-cut role, or in the case of Jonathan Mingo and Luke Schoonmaker, players the Cowboys know enough about.

I wonder if Malachi Lawrence winds up with a higher snap count than expected, though. He’s a first-round pick but appears to be far from having that top backup spot at edge rusher secured. Maybe the Cowboys want him to get more reps.

The longest list by far, I believe these are the Cowboys you’ll see the most of throughout August. The main event will clearly be the competition at quarterback between Joe Milton and Sam Howell, but there will be more to watch.

Who earns the final spot at WR? Can Michael Trigg make a push for the 53-man roster as an undrafted tight end? And what are the offensive line combinations we’ll see? We’ll find out soon enough.
