Christian Parker is showing us his secret sauce to fix the Dallas Cowboys defense, and not enough people are talking about it. Five practices into training camp, the Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator is deploying a pressure scheme that could turn linebacker DeMarvion Overshown into one of the most dangerous blitzers in the NFL.

Let’s break it down.

There’s still plenty to figure out with Overshown. The biggest question remains whether he can play middle linebacker with the physicality the position requires. Can he take on climbing offensive linemen at the second level, something far more common at MIKE than at weakside linebacker where he had more open space to operate? There was a play earlier this week where left tackle Tyler Guyton climbed to the second level and swallowed Overshown whole. That part of his game remains to be answered.

But one thing is clear: Overshown as a blitzer is back. 

Parker is fixing what former Cowboys DC Matt Eberflus got wrong

Here’s where things get exciting. In 2024, when Overshown had his breakout year under then-defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, he blitzed on 17.6% of his snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. That usage gave the Cowboys the seventh-highest graded pass rusher among inside linebackers in the NFL, a top-10 inside linebacker in total pressures with 20, and a top-four inside linebacker in sacks with five.

That production came with Overshown blitzing from the weak side. In 2025 under Matt Eberflus, the Cowboys failed to weaponize him the same way. Parker is not making that mistake. Though it’s still early in camp, we’ve seen glimpses of the Cowboys’ blitz plan ahead of the 2026 season. Inside linebackers are often blitzing while outside linebackers drop back into coverage, which surely will open a lot of fun scenarios for Overshown. 

What makes Parker’s approach so potentially devastating is the personnel around Overshown. The Cowboys have the defensive tackles to create rushing lanes. Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams have both shown the ability to run stunts, cross the face of opposing linemen, and steer blockers away from Overshown’s gap. When that happens, Overshown accelerates through with the kind of closing speed and hitting power that makes him a mismatch against running backs tasked with picking him up.

Simulated pressures add another layer

The scheme goes deeper than simple five-man pressure packages. Parker is running his outside linebackers as edge rushers in the 3-4 front, but Rashan Gary, first-round rookie Malachi Lawrence, Barham, and Sam Williams have all been dropping into coverage regularly. Barham even had a pass breakup on a ball intended for CeeDee Lamb earlier in camp.

When those outside linebackers drop, an inside linebacker blitzes. The Cowboys are running simulated pressures designed to confuse offensive lines. It looks like one defender is rushing, but the actual threat comes from somewhere else entirely. That kind of disguise leads to hesitation, and hesitation leads to sacks.

The blitz rate is going up

Parker came from the Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching tree, but he told reporters earlier this year not to call this the Eagles defense or the Vic Fangio defense. Sure, it will be quarters-based with two-high safety looks and plenty of disguise, but my gut feeling? The pressure plan is where Parker plans to put his own stamp on things.

The Eagles ranked 22nd in blitz rate last season, according to MatchQuarters.com. I think the Cowboys are going to be a top-15 team in blitz rate based on what we’ve seen from training camp so far. That might sound like an overreaction, but the Cowboys have the kind of fast, athletic linebackers who make blitzing an enticing option. Overshown can blitz. Barham can blitz. Shemar James has shown flashes of it too.

Parker has a great blitz plan, and the biggest winner is going to be Overshown. Not using him as a consistent pass rush weapon in 2025 was a mistake. Parker is coming in to fix it almost immediately. For now, we wait to see if it translates to the regular season, but the early signs are hard to ignore.
