Darnell Wright shares perspective after record-breaking extension that should have Bears fans excited about his future
The Chicago Bears made a massive investment handing a record-breaking extension over to right tackle Darnell Wright on Tuesday, and his growth and mindset shows why it’s a decision this organization won’t regret.
The Chicago Bears made a massive investment on Tuesday when they announced the extension for right tackle Darnell Wright. A four-year, $116 million deal with $93 million in guarantees made him the highest-paid right tackle in annual value and the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history in terms of total guaranteed money.
Wright was the first draft pick of the Ryan Poles Era, selected 10th overall back in 2023. He’s the first offensive tackle drafted by the team to receive a multi-year extension since Charles Leno in 2017 and the first Bears first-round selection to earn a multi-year extension since Kyle Fuller. It’s a major investment by the entire organization but it’s far from the first Poles made when it comes to Wright.
“I feel very grateful that they trusted me like that,” Wright explained. “…He was invested in me at a really early age – beyond what you think a GM would do. I really appreciate that… Even long before this financial investment, I knew he was invested in me. He drafted me, first and foremost, so I know he believed in me. Then, to see that he puts his foot forward first to even invest some of the time into me. I want to pay that back forward.”

Wright spoke to reporters on Wednesday after practice and talked about how his perspective has shifted now that the money is official. The short answer: nothing is changing. The money is the money. He still intends to go out there, learn from his mistakes, and play to the best of his ability for this football team.
“I think it’s just knowing that you’ll fail, like I’ll fail, everything won’t be perfect.” Wright shared. “I might not have a good game, might not have a good practice. But, it doesn’t change the way that you approach things and the way you work towards what you’re trying to accomplish. Failure is just a part of it, so I had to really accept that to move forward. I was okay with winning ugly or just barely losing. To reach the next level, you have to just be okay with failing.”
That’s real perspective from Wright and it speaks to the amount of growth he’s shown the last three years. He knows his ceiling can be so much higher than what he showed in 2025, when he played partially injured for the majority of the season yet still earned second-team All-Pro honors.
He now has a wide-open shot to be a first-team All-Pro in 2026 and command recognition as one of the best right tackles in football for years to come.
How Ben Johnson and Dan Roushar unlocked the next level for Darnell Wright’s game
Wright attributed most of his recent development to the coaching staff that came in under head coach Ben Johnson. He had a strong start to his career in Chicago, but the real jump came when Johnson arrived last year with a scheme predicated on weaponizing the offensive line, making the linemen focal points and featured players in specific plays rather than unheralded players.
“Ben has the scheme and I think Ben premiers you in plays,” Wright explained. “When he first got here, he instilled the confidence into me that I was going to be a part of the offense. I never had a coach really come up to me and be like ‘we are depending on you.’ Obviously, you do your job, but we are depending on you to complete this play and this is pretty much your play. Just to see a coach like Ben Johnson come in and he has the confidence in you already, it gives you confidence in yourself.”
Johnson noted in the past how the offense was build right-heavy in the run game and that was by design because of the player Wright is on the right side. On Wednesday, running back Kyle Monangai said his favorite part running behind Wright is how easy he makes it.
The mastermind behind much of the up-front execution and Wright’s jump, though, is offensive line coach Dan Roushar. Roushar is the one who showed Wright what it means to be a more consistent player, a trait the Bears still want to see more of going forward. But from day one, Roushar harped on Wright’s consistency, and Wright praised his coaching style as unlike anything he’s experienced before.
“He’s consistent every day in what he does and what he says,” Wright said of Roushar. “He’s honest. Some coaches I’ve had in the past, or some coaches in the league, they’re not very good teachers. They see a guy with talent, but they can’t really convey what it is and teach you, I still need to be taught. He’s such a good teacher – he’s not yelling at you, he’s not screaming at you, he’s not demeaning you – he’s telling you what’s good about the rep and he’s telling you what’s bad about the rep… So you can keep doing the good things and fix the bad things.”

The Bears have plenty of elite young talent on the offensive side of the ball capable of being franchise players for this organization, Wright was just the first of many to land a new deal that will keep him in Chicago for the foreseeable future. That in itself gives Wright an idea of the kind role he needs to be prepared to take on as a future leader for this team.
The Bears have some of those players up-front such as Joe Thuney Jonah Jackson, and now Garrett Bradbury. But those players aren’t going to be in the long-term plans like Wright is now. Wright will quickly become the face of this offensive line room sooner than later, with younger players behind him looking up to the guy who earned his way to a record-setting deal before turning the corner of his prime.
Overall, this was a significant investment for a player the Bears believe strongly in, both in terms of his potential and what he means to the organization as a whole. And for Wright, it’s now about paying it back to the Chicago Bears and proving their investment was worth it.
