Ryan Day’s latest update makes it sound like a surprising player is forcing an Ohio State QB battle
The Ohio Stare QB room seemed to be pretty cut and dry for the 2026 season, but that no longer seems to be the case for the Buckeyes.
The Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback room appeared settled entering the 2026 season. Julian Sayin returns as the starter for his second year in Columbus, and former 5-star recruit Tavian St. Clair figured to slide into the backup role before taking over in 2027. That’s no longer a given.
The latest update from Ohio State coach Ryan Day suggests true freshman Luke Fahey is making the backup quarterback battle a real competition ahead of the season opener against Ball State on Sept. 5.
Fahey, a former 3-star recruit and the No. 586 player in the class of 2026 according to 247Sports composite rankings, was not expected to push St. Clair this early. Yet Day made it clear on Saturday that the freshman has done exactly that.
“He’s been really doing a great job, he’s putting a lot of pressure on Tavien. He really is. He’s been competing. He’s been making plays,” Day said on Saturday. “That’s been exciting to see him come in with a certain work ethic, run the offense at a pretty high level. We’ll kind of see how the rest of camp plays out, but good to see him kind of step in and push Tavien.”
Good development for Luke Fahey, small concern for Tavien St. Clair
Fahey shedding his black stripe over the weekend is another sign that the freshman is seriously emerging in the quarterback room. He is performing better than people thought he would be at this stage, and that’s a positive for Ohio State’s depth at the position.
Still, the flip side of Fahey’s rise is worth noting. St. Clair arrived in Columbus with significant hype as a top recruit. Entering his second year with the program, the expectation was that he would be the clear-cut backup to Sayin. The fact that a true freshman is putting genuine pressure on him will raise some eyebrows among fans, even if St. Clair remains the likely No. 2.
Ohio State still has a few weeks until fall camp wraps up and the Buckeyes open the season at home against Ball State. It would be a major surprise if St. Clair was not the backup quarterback when that game kicks off. The second-year signal caller still has time to separate himself.
The bigger takeaway is what Fahey’s push means for the future. Day having a quarterback room with real competition beyond the starter is a good problem to have, and it gives Ohio State options if anything changes down the road. Fahey has made his presence felt far earlier than anyone anticipated, and how the rest of camp unfolds will determine whether that momentum carries into the season and whether or not he gets backup snaps.
