3 reasons to absolutely love the Dallas Cowboys’ addition of Von Miller, including a game-changing theme
The Dallas Cowboys adding Von Miller is bigger than it seems for reasons that go beyond his level of play at 37 years old.
The Dallas Cowboys are adding Von Miller to their roster, a 7-time All-Pro and future Hall of Famer. The Cowboys are signing the veteran edge rusher to a one-year deal, according to multiple reports, and the financials will likely reveal a very inexpensive contract.
At 37 years old, Miller is well past his prime, and Dallas is almost certainly looking at him as a rotational piece rather than a defensive superstar. However, that doesn’t mean Cowboys fans shouldn’t be excited about the signing. Here are three reasons to absolutely love it.
Miller raises the floor of the Cowboys defense
This is a move that raises the floor of your defense. Period. Von Miller may not be here to bench Donovan Ezeiruaku and Rashan Gary, who are the projected starters, but he is here to rotate in with them. He figures to be heavily involved in the Cowboys’ pass rush when obvious passing situations arise, particularly on third downs.
That works for me! I mean heck, Miller recorded 9 sacks with the Commanders last season while playing only 37% of their defensive snaps. That alone should tell you Miller can still get it done even if he’s not the same star he once was.
Beyond the starting lineup, Miller also raises the bar for the depth chart. Before his arrival, Dallas would have been looking at the likes of first-round rookie Malachi Lawrence, who is promising but needs time in his development, along with Sam Williams and James Houston. Nothing against them, but Von Miller brings things to the table they don’t.
A Hall of Fame mentor for young edge rushers
Reason No. 2 is simple but important. Von Miller has a Hall of Fame career’s worth of lessons to share. The Cowboys have Donovan Ezeiruaku, a second-year edge rusher, and Malachi Lawrence, a rookie. I don’t think you could have asked for a better mentor in the outside linebackers room.
Miller doesn’t just have the individual stats. He’s been in the Super Bowl (and won it twice!). He’s a former Super Bowl MVP. He’s been there. And that’s the kind of thing Dallas could use in its locker room, because the Cowboys have famously not been there. In fact, the Cowboys are a team that has consistently fallen short in the playoffs. Miller is a mentor for the young edge rushers, but he’s also a player the entire locker room can draw experience from. If the Cowboys’ season goes well and they find themselves on big stages come January, Von Miller’s presence will pay dividends.
This front office is moving different
Reason No. 3 is a little broader, a little more big picture if you will. This Cowboys front office is moving differently. And I’ve been highly critical of the way Dallas does things for a long time. I was very critical of the Micah Parsons trade. I am year after year critical of their free agency spending. But I don’t think the Cowboys make this move a year ago or two years ago.
Aside from the Parsons trade, which was the result of negotiations getting personal, the Cowboys went out and got George Pickens when they needed a wide receiver. When they realized their defense wasn’t good enough, they went and got a superstar replacement for Parsons in the form of Quinnen Williams.
Heck, I thought Dallas was going to cut Kenny Clark as a cap casualty after one year on the team, and instead the Cowboys kept him on board alongside Williams, who they signed to a long-term extension, proving they’re spending differently at a position they undervalued for years. They used a top-15 draft pick on safety Caleb Downs, another position they’ve historically undervalued.
This Cowboys front office is acting like one that believes it can win and can win in the playoffs. Will that be true or not? We will find out. But they’re acting like it. And I don’t think this rules out a bigger move down the road to bolster the defense. Cowboys fans should really appreciate that.
