The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are gearing up for their second preseason game on Saturday at home against the Kansas City Chiefs.

With just three preseason games, teams often will look to the second preseason games as the “dress rehearsal” for starters to get some reps ahead of the season. Naturally, one of the biggest questions is whether starting quarterback Baker Mayfield will see action for Tampa Bay.

According to Todd Bowles, that’s a yes. Bowles spoke to the media on Monday after practice and announced that Baker Mayfield will play on Friday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s certainly understandable to not want to risk injury, to speak the obvious. Last year, Mayfield did not play in the preseason, but the Bucs were also without All-Pro LT Tristan Wirfs, who was recovering from a knee issue that kept him out the first quarter of the season. It’s of course unwise to put your starting QB into a game where his blindside protector is a backup.

Wirfs returned to practice on Monday, so one has to imagine that if Bowles is willing to put Mayfield on the field, he’ll have a full contingent of starting offensive linemen in there to block for him.

The Bucs and Chiefs get underway at 7:30 pm on Saturday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
