Bears’ left tackle battle needs to take a definitive turn and it should spell the end for a former draft pick
The Chicago Bears need to start finding some clarity at the left tackle position and the only way to do so is by weeding out the flock going into the second week of preseason.
The Chicago Bears went into Saturday’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns hoping to get clarity at the left tackle position, at least between two of the players competing for the starting job.
Kiran Amegadjie, the team’s former third-round draft pick, was handed the starting opportunity and rotated evenly throughout the game with former Browns first-round pick Jedrick Wills Jr. Here’s the tale of the tape from that game.
| Player | Snaps | Pass-Block Grade | Run-Block Grade | Pressures-Sacks Allowed |
| Kiran Amegadjie | 34 | 33.9 | 49.6 | 3-0 |
| Jedrick Wills Jr. | 30 | 53.4 | 59.2 | 1-1 |
Overall, Wills had the worst play on the one-on-one sack he allowed against Julian Okwara, but I believe that Wills looked consistently better than Amegadjie on a down-to-down basis, which is remarkable for a player playing in a game for the first time since Nov. 2024. The biggest takeaway, however, is that neither showed enough to prove they can be a starting-caliber player.
“I did not see a viable starting left tackle out there,” Adam Hoge said Monday on Hoge and Jahns. “I thought Jedrick was clearly better than Kiran. He looked more consistent, he seemed more confident, and Kiran to me just seemed unsure at times and a little sloppy.”
It’s time to eliminate Kiran Amegadjie from this battle and focus on what really matters
The results from Saturday’s game proved that the leader in the clubhouse for the starting left tackle job remains Braxton Jones, who returned to practice on Sunday and took the majority of the first-team reps. It’s also worth noting that Ozzy Trapilo was back out there on Sunday doing individual drills after getting activated from the PUP. Those two are easily Chicago’s top two tackle options.
Over the next three weeks or so, the ideal scenario is that the Bears can get a real look at Jones and Trapilo during the joint practices and hopefully during the final preseason games. I’ll admit that’s asking a lot out of Trapilo, but Jones should be out there starting against the Cincinnati Bengals in the joint practice and the game.
To me, the battle between Wills and Amegadjie has turned into which player is more deserving of keeping on the practice squad. That player should be Wills after what we saw on Saturday and it’s a tough pill for Ryan Poles to swallow because it’s clear the Bears need to move on from Amegadjie.
I would much rather see Theo Benedet, who worked in at left tackle on Sunday, get more snaps there behind Jones moving forward to prepare for the swing tackle role with Wills getting third-team reps than see Amegadjie get another chance.
This battle is clearly Jones’ job to lose at this point and truthfully the only way he can do so (outside of another injury) is Trapilo quickly ramping back up. My take is the Bears should keep Jones, Trapilo, and Benedet on the 53-man roster and attempt to bring back Wills on the practice squad. Then, you try to find a trade partner for Amegadjie, but either way his time in Chicago is quickly coming to a close.
