Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides latest injury update on starting RG Trey Smith at training camp on Monday
Kansas City Chiefs RG Trey Smith has missed 10 days of practice and preseason Week 1 due to a hip injury. Andy Reid provided an update on the starter following training camp practice on Monday.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid delivered the latest injury update on starting RG Trey Smith following training camp practice on Monday.
Smith has been out of training camp and the preseason since the first week of August after he suffered a hip injury. Reid explained then that it wasn’t expected to be a long-term injury, even though the team sent him to a specialist to have it checked out as a precaution.
“Trey (Smith), his hip was bothering him,” Reid said on Aug. 7. “Sent him to a specialist, just to have it checked out. Precautionary. He’s going to be OK.”
With the final week of training camp beginning on Monday, Aug. 17, Reid was asked about Smith’s status and whether he would get back out there this week.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid says Trey Smith is “getting close” to returning
The good news is that Smith sounds close to returning. The bad news is that it doesn’t sound like it will happen during this final week of training camp practice.
“Yeah, Trey (Smith)’s doing good,” Reid said. “You know, we’ll see. I mean, he’s getting close, so we’ll just see where it goes here. I don’t know if you’ll see him this week, but he’s getting close.”
Podcaster Farzin Vousoughian captured video of Smith working off to the side during the course of practice on Monday.
He doesn’t have the same gait as he did after returning from his visit to the specialist. That alone suggests that Smith is making progress in his recovery.
Chiefs lean on rookie Kahlil Benson and Jaylon Moore at right guard
With Smith sidelined due to his hip injury, the Chiefs leaned on rookie Kahlil Benson to fill in at right guard with the starting offensive line during preseason Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams. Reid told reporters that he felt Benson did a good job in place of Smith in the first NFL action of his career.
Still, Kansas City is trying to get other players action at starting right guard. On Monday, right tackle Jaylon Moore replaced Benson at right guard, with Benson moving out to play the right tackle spot Moore had been filling. That didn’t indicate that Benson or Moore didn’t perform well. Reid explained after practice that they simply want both Benson and Moore to be able to play both right tackle and right guard in a pinch.
“(Kahlil) Benson held his own at the guard spot in the game,” Reid said after practice on Monday. “And listen, they need to be able to play both as we go through this thing, and it’s a good experience for. But it’s not one over the other. Like I said, Moore’s put together a lot of good days here, and played well the other night.”
What could Trey Smith’s timeline look like for Kansas City?
Smith doesn’t appear ready to make his return ahead of preseason Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He could certainly see action in the final game of the preseason if the team feels comfortable. Kansas City could also keep him out through the preseason and have him ready to face the Broncos in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season. After all, you want to have your best guys out there against Denver’s pass rush.
