Detroit Lions Training Camp Observations Day 15: It might be time to go QB shopping, offense struggles, defense shines, troubled CB is stacking good days
The Detroit Lions defense had itself a DAY at training camp. The offense struggled, the pass rush kept getting home, and one cornerback who desperately needed consistency is suddenly stacking good practices. It’s probably time to QB shopping.
Day 15 of training camp is in the books for the Detroit Lions, and there’s a lot to talk about with this one. Let’s jump right into it.
Jameson Williams was back
Williams missed practice on Monday, and that worried Lions fans some, but the good news is that he was back on the field on Wednesday, and he didn’t miss a beat. Not that one day would cause someone to miss a beat, but I’m just saying, he wasn’t wrapped in bubble wrap.
Juice Scruggs probably has the center job
Scruggs was the first-team center for the majority of the day, and McLaughlin didn’t get reps there till on series at the end of the practice. That’s not to say that McLaughlin can’t make the 53-man roster at the end of camp as a backup center, but his reps with the first team have been few and far between since Scruggs got back. And you can see why; Scruggs handles it pretty well.
Ennis Rakestraw’s stringing some days together
This is exactly what Lions head coach Dan Campbell wanted from him. Instead of up and down, it’s largely been all up since the game against the Bengals. On Wednesday, he had some nice pass breakups on Jameson Williams and then sacked Luke Altmyer on a corner blitz during situational drills.
Sack party
There was a lot of getting home for the Lions defense on Wednesday. Aidan Hutchinson had the biggest sack of the day when the Lions were in a situational drill that had them down 31-24. The Lions got downfield, and with less than 10 seconds left, Isaac TeSlaa got into the end zone to make it 31-30.
The Lions decided to go for the win with a two-point conversion, but Hutchinson got to Goff and ended the game. Goff then jumped on Hutchinson’s back jokingly.
Outside of Hutchinson, Derrick Moore had a sack, Rakestraw had one, and Anthony Lucas and Myles Adams teamed up for one.
It’s probably time to go quarterback shopping
Ok, It’s the second week of Josh Dobbs in Detroit, and it’s hard to not notice that he is doing nothing at all. When I say he’s doing nothing at all, that’s not me saying that he’s out there and he’s not completing passes or making anything happen. I’m saying he’s literally doing nothing at all.
Altmyer got 96% of the QB2 snaps on Wednesday, and Dobbs came out for a little bit in 7-on-7s.
You can make the argument that Altmyer maybe needs the reps more since he’s a rookie, but then the counter to that would be: doesn’t Dobbs need reps too since he’s never played in this offense? When he does get reps, we haven’t seen much that would make you feel comfortable with the Lions putting it all on him if Goff went down. At this point, it feels like they’re probably moving on and looking to claim someone who gets cut elsewhere next week.
By the way, this isn’t a shot at Altmyer. The kid is improving out there, and I think everyone can see it, but if you needed him to play a regular-season game right now, it would likely go pretty badly for him out there. If I’m Detroit, I’m watching the Will Levis situation closely.
Goff is still really good with the cadence
Believe it or not, the moment that got the crowd to cheer the loudest all day was right before that failed two-point conversion we mentioned earlier. Goff got the defense to jump on the goal line, and it put them a little bit closer to it in their attempt. He’s been getting pretty good at this if you haven’t noticed.
Situational drill breakdown
Ok, here’s the situation. The Lions are tied 10-10 at the end of the first half with 3:31 left and on their own 28-yard line.
