One of the biggest stories of the offseason is the number drama between Jayden Daniels and LSU.

Daniels’ camp isn’t thrilled that LSU sophomore DJ Pickett is wearing No. 5 this season.

As a result, Daniels’ camp told LSU earlier this month that the school can no longer use the former Tiger’s name, image, and likeness.

Opinions are all over the place on this. Some fans feel like Daniels is being over the top, others feel like he has a legit gripe. And others feel like this is all happening because of Daniels’ mom/agent.

Regardless of your take on the drama, there’s no doubt that it’s a polarizing topic.

Former Georgia RB Todd Gurley is taking Jayden Daniels’ side

Former Georgia Bulldogs running back and 2017 NFL offensive player of the year Todd Gurley was asked for his thoughts on the Daniels number drama this week on 4th And South w/ Jarvis Landry & Leonard Fournette.

And it sounds like Gurley is taking Daniels’ side.

Gurley thinks the schools have “too much power.”

“I get that nothing’s bigger than the program, but we gotta stop like saying that because we’re giving them too much power,” said Gurley. “Yes, LSU is LSU and Georgia is Georgia. But we made these schools as legendary as they became — because of the legends and the people that came before us.

“Ain’t nothing bigger than the program, but ain’t nothing bigger than us and our own selves — the belief that we had in ourselves. Yes, they had a belief in us and recruited us, and we went to go play for them. But we’ve got to stop giving the schools passes.”

I think what Gurley is getting at is that we shouldn’t just automatically assume the school is on the right side of a situation like this.

And I think he has a point. The only reason Lane Kiffin and LSU are giving Pickett the No. 5 is because he’s a good player and they wanted him to stay in Baton Rouge (Pickett had the number thing put into his contract after the 2025 season). That’s the only reason, otherwise this would’ve never been a thing.
