Seahawks roster hit with injury to locker room favorite, as 2 young players get sudden chance to step up
Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald had to provide the tough injury update after his team’s joint practice with the Tennessee Titans.
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jake Bobo suffered what appears to be a serious knee injury during joint practice against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, and this is the kind of news nobody wants to hear heading into the regular season. Bobo was carted off the practice field, and the early indications from head coach Mike Macdonald suggest a long-term absence for the beloved undrafted success story.
Look, Jake Bobo is a guy who has defied the odds at every turn in his NFL career. Making it as an undrafted free agent is hard enough. Building the kind of respect he has within that locker room is another thing entirely.
The entire team took a knee around him on the practice field and prayed over him, which tells you everything you need to know about what this guy means to the Seahawks organization.
What coach Mike Macdonald and Sam Darnold had to say
“Our heart goes out to Jake Bobo,” Macdonald told reporters after practice. “It seems like it’s going to be a serious knee injury. We’re going to get an image, but early returns are that it looks like it’s a long-term injury. That’s unfortunate.”
Macdonald also spoke to the kind of player and person Bobo is.
“He’s a beast, man,” he added. “Just a great football player, a great Seahawk. Hopefully we reflected that in our investment in him, but we love him and we’ll be there beside him as he recovers, and we pray it’s a speedy recovery, but we love it.”
And when Macdonald references the investment Seattle made in Bobo, that part matters. Bobo was planning on signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars this past offseason. The Seahawks re-signed him to a 2-year, $5.5 million contract in March, matching Jacksonville’s offer to bring him back to Seattle. That tells you how much this organization valued him.
Quarterback Sam Darnold was also asked about it after practice.
“It hurts, man,” said Darnold. “He’s one of those guys that just works, he talks a lot of stuff, and he’s kind of like Devon Witherspoon in a way offensively. He brings the juice every single day and he just does his job. So it sucks to lose Bobo, but I know he’s going to attack it and be better whenever he comes back.”
I agree with Darnold. Jake Bobo has made it this long as an undrafted guy. You have to assume he is going to attack the heck out of his rehab and be suited up, ready to go next season, ready to compete for his job and make plays for this team.
An unforeseen opportunity for two young receivers
Now for the unfortunate reality: the Seahawks have to look ahead. By all accounts, it sounds like Bobo will not suit up at any point during the 2026 season.
Seattle drafted Emmanuel Henderson Jr. in the 6th round this year out of Kansas, and this unfortunate injury provides him the opportunity to step into a bigger role. Montorie Foster Jr. is another name to watch. The second-year undrafted free agent out of Michigan State has had an excellent preseason so far and has been high on my radar for guys making the back end of this roster.
I would look for both of those guys to step up and show they can handle increased responsibilities, likely on special teams too. Tory Horton, a draft pick from last year, is also in the mix, but is someone who likely has his spot more solidified given that he saw some action last year before suffering a tibia fracture. Horton has however been missing some practice lately as he continues to work back, thus increasing the opportunity for Henderson and Foster.
The Seahawks are still in a good spot with their wide receiver room. They have plenty of options. But losing a guy like Bobo, someone who earned everything he got in this league, just weeks before the regular season? That’s a tough blow.
Here’s hoping the rest of this Seattle roster can stay healthy through the remainder of the preseason and that Bobo comes back stronger than ever in 2027.
