5 Dallas Cowboys practice squad players that will likely play this season

The Dallas Cowboys’ initial 17-man practice squad is locked in ahead of Week 1. Who can you expect to see called up at some point of the 2026 NFL season?

Listen, it’s not like you can really predict who plays and who doesn’t throughout the peaks and valleys of an NFL season.

To precit practice squad call-ups would, in a way, be predicting injuries. I don’t want to do that and I certainly hope you don’t take it that way. But I did want to look at Dallas Cowboys practice squad players and see what names stood out as players who could likely get called up based on their position versatility or the fact that they’re good football players. So let’s dive in.

1. TE Michael Trigg

Trigg’s preseason didn’t go the way he wanted it to go. Following a solid opener in which he caught three passes for 40 yards, he missed the second game with a toe injury and walked away from the finale with no catches in three targets.

But throughout training camp, Trigg showed he can block. His upside as a receiving threat might earn him some playing time should the Cowboys navigate injuries at tight end. That is, instead of bringing in someone from the outside.

2. DB Reddy Steward

I believe Steward, who spent time at nickel and safety throughout the preseason, was a serious 53-man roster candidate. But the Cowboys have a deep room of safeties and a lot of candidates to play the slot, starting with first-round rookie Caleb Downs.

But that versatility could mean he’ll be on speed dial for the Cowboys. Even if it’s for depth, I wouldn’t be surprised if Steward is elevated multiple times throughout the year.

3. LB Justin Barron

Barron was one of my darkhorses to make the 53 just based on special teams, where he was a standout in Syracuse. But the second-year linebacker will have to wait on the squad. The Cowboys inside linebacker room is still thin, too, as they carried only four players at the position.

The Cowboys want to get better on special teams and Barron could help achieve that goal.

4. OL Wanya Morris

The Cowboys gave up a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick (getting a fourth in return) for OT Broderick Jones. I would’ve guessed that made him the Cowboys swing tackle. But now I’m not so sure, with Schottenheimer announcing he’s only training at right tackle. Not to mention, moving from one position to another is said by Jones to be why he struggled in Pittsburgh.

That leads us to Morris, who could very well be an emergency left tackle for the Cowboys. Rookie Drew Shelton isn’t a viable left tackle and needs time to develop. Do the Cowboys want to move Tyler Smith to left tackle if Tyler Guyton goes down? Or is Morris the true backup LT?

5. iOL Nick Leverrett

The Cowboys waiving Leverrett was a genuine roster cutdown day surprise. He played well at center in the preseason and Schottenheimer even praised him during the preseason. Instead, the Cowboys are seemingly ready to ask T.J. Bass (who is also the swing guard) to play center in a pinch.

But if Bass has to step up at guard at any moment, Leverrett will likely get the call to provide depth at center.
