We just saw the craziest ending in the history of college football. A lot of non-Michigan fans, anybody really outside of Ann Arbor, are immediately going to push back and say what we just saw was the biggest robbery in the history of collegiate sports. There’s a chance that it was both.

The Michigan Wolverines looked like they were going to go down as having potentially the biggest upset in program history. Quarterback Bryce Underwood, the signal-caller who was paid millions of dollars and who a lot of people were extremely high on coming into this year after a rocky freshman season, had an awful game. A horrific game. We will get to him in a second.

An ending for the ages

This ending is going to go down, in my opinion, as one of the most controversial, one of the craziest, and certainly one of the most memorable ways that a football game, that a sporting event, has ever ended. Western Michigan thought they won the football game. They thought it was over. They saw zeros on the clock.

The NBC Sports media official correspondent came out and said the only reason there was another second left was if the stadium clock was different from the clock shown on television. That’s the only reason a second can even get put back on there. So Western Michigan had this huge adrenaline dump. They thought they finally pulled off a massive upset, only to find out there was one second left in the game.

And what happens in that one second? Underwood throws up a Hail Mary, an absolute heave, and somehow, someway, the Wolverines catch the ball, win the game by a point, and storm the field. I’m going to be honest with you: even if you’re a diehard Michigan supporter, it’s pretty embarrassing to storm your home field in a Week 1 game against Western Michigan, a team the Wolverines are probably paying millions of dollars just to show up and get their butts kicked. That’s a whole other level.

The real issue: Underwood’s performance

The real issue here is that Michigan can’t let this win overshadow how bad Underwood was. And former NFL safety Eric Weddle tried to tell us this over the summer. He went up to practice at Michigan and went on a podcast later in the week and said that Underwood looked terrible, questioning how the Wolverines could play him.

For much of the game, really outside of the first drive, that was the sentiment surrounding Underwood. He looked awful. The decision-making was poor, he threw an interception, and he didn’t throw for a ton of yards. He made some plays with his legs, but overall he looked like a player who simply cannot be a P4 quarterback, much less a starting quarterback for a Michigan program that many have high hopes for.

What’s next for Michigan?

All in all, an unforgettable ending, certainly a stinker for Western Michigan. If you’re a Michigan fan, you’ve got Oklahoma coming up — and based on what you just saw tonight, you’re probably pretty worried.
