Rapp was on the 90-man offseason roster for less than a week. He initially signed with the team in late August. The 28-year-old defensive back brings seven years of starting-caliber experience to the Broncos. And it comes at a position where they lack much veteran depth.
Talanoa Hufanga and Brandon Jones man the two starting safety spots for the Denver defense. JL Skinner, Devon Key, and rookie Tycen Anderson serve as depth on the 53-man roster. Rapp’s 93 games of NFL experience stands out when looking at the back half of the defensive back room.
Taylor Rapp’s NFL career and what he brings to Denver
Rapp was a 2019 second-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams. He’s a Super Bowl champion with 70-plus career starts, 12 career interceptions, and multiple sacks. He spent the last three seasons of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills, building out his reputation as a versatile piece who can play all over the back end of the defense. Safety and nickel spots are his bread and butter.
Rapp recently worked out for the Broncos again after he was released because of what coach Sean Payton described as a personal family matter that needed time at home before he could fully commit to football. Payton was optimistic about a reunion later. Now that the situation has been resolved, Rapp is returning to Denver to provide depth at safety.
What Taylor Rapp’s signing means for Denver’s Week 1 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs
Rapp is unlikely to be available to play in Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs. However, he could be a valuable piece for the scout team, giving Denver the types of looks they could face against Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium.
Down the line, Rapp could become a key piece for the defense, whether he’s elevated from the practice squad on game days or the Broncos make corresponding roster moves to keep the secondary in top shape.
