The New York Giants appear to have received the best possible update on their injury front heading into Week 1. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, wide receiver Malik Nabers is trending toward being active and healthy enough to play against the Dallas Cowboys on “Sunday Night Football.” Nabers is still recovering from an ACL injury he suffered last season, a serious setback with lasting ramifications.

The second-year receiver practiced throughout training camp even though he sat out the preseason, mostly as a precautionary measure. Now it seems Nabers is fully healthy and ready to suit up against Dallas, which is a tremendous sign for the Giants’ offense entering the regular season.

Offense gains more upside and flexibility

This update helps explain why New York was comfortable moving on from veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton, who was released on Monday. The Giants are entering the regular season with only four wide receivers on the 53-man roster: Nabers, Odell Beckham Jr., third-round rookie Malachi Fields, and Darnell Mooney. The team does have four more receivers on the practice squad (Braxton Berrios, Jalin Hyatt, Dalen Cambre, and Charlie Jones) with the option to elevate one or two for game day, but Nabers’ health gave the front office and coaching staff more leeway to operate the roster without Slayton.

Nabers is the most explosive offensive weapon on the Giants’ roster. During training camp and the preseason, players like Isaiah Likely, Beckham, and Fields had to step up in his absence. Getting him back changes the calculus for the entire passing attack.

The return is especially significant for young quarterback Jaxson Dart. Nabers gives Dart a dynamic target who can stress every level of the field with his explosiveness, route-running ability, and strong hands. For a young quarterback still establishing himself under a new system, having that caliber of weapon available can accelerate his development.

Timing is perfect with an NFC East game on the horizon

The Giants open the John Harbaugh era against a divisional rival on primetime television. It’s the ideal stage to make a first impression, and there’s no better way to do it than with a full complement of offensive weapons. Nabers’ availability gives New York a legitimate chance to compete in a game that will set the tone for the season, even though the Cowboys have a strong offense.
