Dallas Cowboys make familiar move with Christian Parker that sends a worrying message about their defensive coordinator

The Dallas Cowboys defense ranks dead last in nearly every meaningful metric through five games. Now Jerry Jones has revealed a change that feels awfully familiar from 2025.

The Dallas Cowboys are following a familiar script with defensive coordinator Christian Parker, and it’s the same script they ran with Matt Eberflus before moving on from him after one season of coordinating the defense in 2025.

Parker is headed to the coaching booth. Instead of calling the defense from the Cowboys sideline, he will work from upstairs on game days, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan.

“We’re gonna coach the defense from not on the field but up above, Parker is going [to the booth],” Jones said. “You should be looking for ways to adjust to make changes to improve.”

That’s pretty big news for a Cowboys defense that’s desperate for any fixes available. Parker on the sideline isn’t going well so why not do something different, right? But it’s difficult to feel good about such a big change this early on. And it’s hard not to question if it’s something Parker truly wanted or something he’s being told to do by head coach Brian Schottenheimer or the front office.

The recent history inside the team raises a worrying message. Last season, Eberflus moved to the booth in his final three games with the Cowboys. That’s not to say Dallas is parting ways with Parker anytime soon. But if Parker didn’t want this, we’ll find out in the future if he did, it’s quite the statement to make inside the building.

The Cowboys defense is dead last for a reason

Through five games, Dallas has the worst defense in the NFL in just about every metric you can think of. EPA per play? Last. Success rate? Last. Third down and the red zone? You can probably guess.

Several factors are behind it. The Cowboys have personnel issues, but they certainly have coaching issues too. Parker’s defense started off on the wrong foot, and this news makes that clear.

Listen, coaches rarely want to make these changes in season. A move like this only happens when a unit is struggling. Hearing it about Parker only five games into the year strongly suggests the people inside the building aren’t happy with the way he has led this defense.

It was tough to believe back in 2025 that Eberflus was the one who wanted to move to the booth. I find it just as hard to believe that Parker is asking for the same adjustment.

Not exactly the vibes you want heading into Week 6.

Mike Pettine joins the staff

The booth move isn’t the only adjustment going on in Dallas.

The Cowboys brought in Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant, according to Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer. Dallas actually targeted Pettine for Parker’s staff earlier in the year, but he was retired and it didn’t work out at the time. Now it does.

Per Schottenheimer, Pettine will support what Parker is doing and guiding, and his responsibilities include studying league trends, among other things.

Schottenheimer also made it clear the changes won’t stop there. The Cowboys are making personnel decisions, which he described as a mix of notable moves and more subtle ones.

What personnel changes could be coming?

Only time will tell what those changes look like. But a few names stand out.

Cornerback DaRon Bland, who signed a $92 million contract extension only last year, has struggled to the point where benching him looks like an option the Cowboys could pursue, and might pursue, as soon as Week 6.

Linebacker is another spot where Dallas could shake things up with DeMarvion Overshown returning to the lineup. And with Joey Porter Jr. joining the defense, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cowboys lean into more man coverage.

Whatever the specific tweaks end up being, one thing is clear: the Cowboys have to be better.

Shaking things up for the sake of it?

Here’s my issue. The Cowboys are moving their defensive play caller to the booth for the second consecutive year, and this time it’s happening even earlier in the season.

I don’t want to call it a questionable decision, because things clearly weren’t working with Parker on the sideline. To be fair, standing pat with the worst defense in the league wasn’t an option.

I still struggle to see this as anything other than the Cowboys shaking things up for the sake of shaking things up. I’m not a fan of moving Parker to the booth at this point. It doesn’t show a lot of belief in the defensive coordinator, especially one who is only five games into the job.

The only thing that will fix the vibes is strong performances and, of course, winning. The Pettine addition and whatever lineup changes come next will help determine whether that happens.

For now, we wait to see where the Cowboys end up a few weeks from now.
