Arch Manning is set up for a major bounce-back against Florida as Texas’ offense looks to silence its doubters
The Texas Longhorns return home after a stretch of growing questions about Steve Sarkisian’s offense, and a struggling Florida secondary sets up as a perfect matchup for Arch Manning this weekend.
I expect a major bounce-back performance from Arch Manning when the Texas Longhorns host the Florida Gators on Saturday.
And before anyone rolls their eyes, this isn’t about his last name. It isn’t me trying to revive the preseason hype, either, when plenty of people were ready to crown him before he took a meaningful snap. This take is rooted in two things: how bad this Florida defense has looked and what we’ve seen from Manning at home.
Here’s the simplest way I can put it. Arch Manning is a different quarterback at home and this is an ideal matchup for him to prove it yet again.
Home Arch and road Arch are two different players
On the road, we’ve seen the worst version of Arch Manning. The rhythm isn’t there, the decision-making gets shaky, and the Texas offense looks like it’s fighting itself. At home, it’s a completely different story. We’ve seen incredible moments and a prolific passing attack, the kind of play that made people believe in him in the first place.
And you may say, Tegan, one split doesn’t make a trend. Fair enough. But when the gap between the two versions is this wide, you can’t just wave it away. Comfort matters for a young quarterback, and Manning has been at his best in Austin, Texas. That’s the version I’m betting on in this game.
Now, as a Texas A&M fan, believe me when I say I’m not writing this to prop up the Longhorns. I’ve been one of the louder voices questioning this offense. That’s exactly why I think this game sets up the way it does for Manning and the offense to bounce back.
This Florida secondary is the perfect opponent
Florida’s secondary is not good, and the tape backs that up. Austin Simmons torched them. Trinidad Chambliss did too. Even LaNorris Sellers had incredible statistical output and was able to beat Florida on the road.
So if quarterbacks who have had their own ups and downs can carve up this Gators defense, what happens when a quarterback who plays his best football at home gets the same opportunity?
I don’t think there’s a better defense in the entire country for Texas to face right now if it wants to have a really good offensive performance. And I think that performance has to come through the air.
The narrative has set up a Sarkisian response as well
Think about everything that has built up around this Texas team. I’ve baked into that narrative myself. I’ve said the Longhorns should bring in an offensive coordinator, and I’ve questioned Steve Sarkisian as a play caller
When a coach hears that kind of noise week after week, you usually get a response. Sarkisian has a reputation to protect, and I believe we’re going to see a really good play-calling performance from him on Saturday.
Expect a game plan that attacks this Florida secondary early and often, giving Manning chances to get into a rhythm instead of forcing him to play from behind.
The offensive line is the one real concern for the Longhorns
I’m not going to pretend this is a guaranteed shootout. There are obvious concerns with the Texas offensive line. Will Manning have enough time to let routes develop downfield? Can the protection hold up long enough for Sarkisian to dial up the shots this matchup invites? Those are legitimate questions, and if the line collapses, this whole take gets a lot shakier.
With that being said, I think the matchup outweighs the protection problems. A bad secondary can make a shaky offensive line look a lot better, because receivers win quicker and throwing windows open sooner.
I’m not calling this a 110 percent lock for Texas. But I feel good about it. Arch Manning is at home, he’s comfortable, and that has been the best version of him yet. Pair that with a Sarkisian who has every reason to prove his doubters wrong and a Florida secondary that has been getting picked apart, and I think we get a really good performance from Texas this Saturday against Florida.
If Manning can’t find his footing in this spot, then the questions about this offense will get a whole lot louder.
