Brian Schottenheimer directly contradicts Jerry Jones on Dallas Cowboys’ plan with Christian Parker
The Dallas Cowboys’ plans on where Christian Parker will be at are not finalized despite Jerry Jones’ public comments.
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones broke news earlier this week when he casually said defensive coordinator Christian Parker would move from the sidelines to the coaching booth moving forward.
After mentioning it as an off-the-cuff comment, Jones was asked to confirm if he was saying Parker was moving to the booth. Jones said yes.
Well, head coach Brian Schottenheimer is now publicly contradicting Jones.
“None of those decisions have been finalized,” Schottenheimer told reporters on Wednesday.
Schottenheimer added the Cowboys would make a final decision on Parker’s location throughout the week.
“We’ve had great conversations throughout this whole process,” he added. “Last weekend was a busy weekend for us. We spent hours with (Parker) and talking about different things an options.”
“There’s a good chance Christian is on the field,” Schottenheimer said.
Big deal or small deal?
Listen, you can’t love the idea of your GM/owner and head coach contradicting each other. Even less so if it was the owner breaking the news. It looks like the coaching staff is being undermined.
That being said, we all know the 84-year-old Jerry Jones. And by now, we should learn to take his words with a grain of salt. This is unlikely to be an effort to force the coaching staff’s hand.
So I will say it’s a relatively small deal, but it’s definitely something the Cowboys should avoid repeating. There are enough questions going around regarding Parker’s authority on the team following the Mike Pettine hire.
What I do like, and I assume most Cowboys fans will, is Schottenheimer not shying away from challenging Jones’ comments.
No questions on who leads Cowboys defense
Speaking of, Schottenheimer confirmed the true pecking order in the building.
“Christian Parker is our defensive coordinator and all decisions will run through him,” he said.
The Cowboys defensive coordinator will talk to reporters on Thursday. It will be intriguing to see what he has to say about the whole situation and Pettine’s arrival.
What we do know is the Cowboys are actively looking for solutions to the NFL’s worst defense. We’ll see what their final decision is very soon and if it works out or not.
