Packers’ final injury report before Cowboys game puts 2 defensive position groups under the microscope

Green Bay released its last injury report ahead of “Sunday Night Football,” and the defense has the most names to track with depth already stretched thin.

The Green Bay Packers released their final injury report ahead of Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys on “Sunday Night Football,” and the defense is the main concern. Friday’s report brought mixed updates for Green Bay, especially at defensive tackle and cornerback, two spots where the roster has little margin for error.

Packers injury report

Week 6 vs. Dallas Cowboys

  • DT Jonathan Ford (out – calf)
  • DT Javon Hargrave (out – Achilles)
  • WR Skyy Moore (out – ankle)
  • CB Benjamin St-Juste (out – hamstring)
  • DT Jordon Riley (doubtful – Achilles)
  • G Aaron Banks (questionable – knee/toe)
  • DT Anthony Campbell (questionable – ankle)
  • CB Brandon Cisse (questionable – hip)
  • G Jacob Monk (questionable – quadricep)
  • WR Savion Williams (questionable – ankle)

Cornerback depth is thin

Cornerback Keisean Nixon opened the week as a non-participant on Wednesday with a groin injury, but head coach Matt LaFleur had already confirmed in his press conference that Nixon will play. The veteran returned to practice on a limited basis Thursday, opening the gates for his availability against Dallas.

On the other hand, rookie second-rounder Brandon Cisse was added to the injury report with a hip injury. He was limited on Friday and is questionable to play. Meanwhile, backup cornerback Benjamin St-Juste has a hamstring injury and did not practice at all. He’s already been ruled out.

The Packers carry only five cornerbacks on the 53-man roster. Outside of Nixon, Cisse, and St-Juste, the group includes Carrington Valentine and Kamal Hadden. Javon Bullard also plays in the slot, which helps, but the depth is still a problem.

Green Bay has two more options on the practice squad. Sixth-round rookie Domani Jackson is one of them, and the other is Elijah Culp, a player whom the Packers signed to the practice squad earlier this week. But with Nixon active, there’s enough room to operate.

Defensive tackle has been hit hard

The other position with plenty of reasons for concern is defensive tackle. Green Bay started the regular season with seven defensive tackles on the 53-man roster, but injuries have taken a toll on the group.

Warren Brinson is on injured reserve with a groin injury. Javon Hargrave remains on the 53-man roster, but he is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles and is ruled out against the Cowboys. He will eventually move to injured reserve as well.

Three more defensive tackles appeared on the report through the week, but Devonte Wyatt (ankle) is off the report and good to go. Jonathan Ford, who has a calf injury, did not practice at all and will not play. Anthony Campbell is also dealing with an ankle injurie, and he’s questionable.

Therefore, the only defensive tackles who are fully healthy going into Sunday are Karl Brooks and rookie third-rounder Chris McClellan. For a position that started the season as one of the deepest on the roster, that’s a significant shift in a short period of time.

A positive development on the way

The good news is that defensive tackle Jordon Riley is working his way back from an Achilles injury. He got hurt late last season and started this season on the physically unable to perform list, but the Packers have now designated him to return.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Riley will play against Dallas. The Packers first have to activate him to the 53-man roster before he can suit up. He was limited at practice throughout the week, though. There’s at least a chance he returns, if not this week, then next week against the Detroit Lions.

Given the state of the interior defensive line, getting Riley back would give Green Bay a much-needed body in the rotation.

One concern on offense and special teams

Kick returner and wide receiver Skyy Moore injured his ankle against the Chicago Bears, and he’s out. Savion Williams (still on IR), Jacob Monk, and Aaron Banks are all questionable.

For the most part, though, the offense comes out of the week in good shape. The defense is a different story, and the Packers will have to manage limited bodies at cornerback and defensive tackle in a primetime game against Dallas.
