New York Jets receive mixed bag of news on injury report ahead of crucial AFC East showdown against New England Patriots
The Jets will be without two important offensive playmakers against New England, but the return of a promising young rookie provides some much-needed optimism.
Good news or bad news for the New York Jets? Honestly, it’s a little bit of both. The Jets got their final injury report heading into their first divisional game of the 2026 season. It’s a Week 6 away matchup Sunday for New York against the New England Patriots. New York is down two of its top playmakers, but a pair of rookies is finally ready to help.
Let’s start with the bad. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that two key weapons on the offense, in both running back Breece Hall, who has a quad injury, and wide receiver AD Mitchell, who has a finger injury, have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against New England.
That’s a tough blow for an offense that needs all the juice it can get. Before I get to the positives, though, I have to talk about the Hall situation.
Breece Hall’s absence is getting frustrating
Hall suffered his quad injury in Week 3 against the Detroit Lions, and the Jets labeled him “week to week” for the injury report. Now, I know only a few weeks have passed since that game. But when I heard week to week, I figured Hall would miss Week 4 against the Chicago Bears and that might be it.
That’s not how it played out. Hall sat out against Chicago, missed last week’s win over the Cleveland Browns, and now he’s going to miss a third straight game.
Look, at this point, the Jets could have put him on IR and freed up a roster spot. They haven’t done that, and for whatever reason, the team keeps holding the door open for a return that hasn’t come. That’s been frustrating to watch.
Losing Mitchell on top of Hall stings, too. Outside of Garrett Wilson, Mitchell has been one of the few perimeter options this offense can lean on, and his finger injury takes another piece off the board.
Rookie reinforcements arrive at the right time
Now for the positives, and there are two big ones.
Rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. will be active for Week 6 after suffering an ankle sprain in Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. We haven’t really gotten to see him in a Jets uniform making plays yet. He made one play against the Titans and got hurt on it. Getting him back on the field adds a much-needed weapon at the exact position where New York is now short-handed. He might not be as good as Mitchell yet, but he is certainly going to help this team.
Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq will be active as well. Sadiq was placed in the concussion protocol after the Browns game last week, so having him cleared this quickly is a huge relief. We’ve seen Sadiq put together a big performance already this year in Detroit. Hopefully, he can get things rolling again.
I’m high on both of these guys. Cooper gives the Jets a receiver who can take attention away from Wilson on the outside, and Sadiq is a matchup problem for linebackers and safeties. With Hall and Mitchell out, the Jets need their young talent to step up, and this is the perfect spot for both rookies to show what they can do.
AJ Brown decision looms for New England
The Patriots have an injury question of their own. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel told reporters Friday that wide receiver AJ Brown, who also suffered a Week 1 ankle injury and has had his practice window opened, he’s not going to make the decision on Brown’s availability for Sunday until tomorrow on Saturday.
So the Jets could see Brown back on the field for New England. That would make an already tough assignment for this Jets secondary even tougher, especially with the Patriots playing hot football over the last two weeks. My gut tells me Brown will play against the Jets, although how many snaps, I do not know.
Why Sunday matters so much for the Jets
Make no mistake, this is a huge game for both teams, especially the Jets. New York desperately needs this one to get back to .500 and start 1-0 in the division. It’s a great opportunity, even as they head into New England.
The Jets are certainly going to miss Hall and Mitchell on their injury report. But getting Sadiq back and having Cooper active are big gets for this offense. If those two rookies deliver the way I think they can, the Jets have a real shot to steal momentum in the AFC East on Sunday.
