Florida Gators’ upset over Texas Longhorns boils down to one key element that showed everything they didn’t in their two losses
After two embarrassing losses by the Florida Gators, they found a way to get an important win to save the 2026 season.
Going into Saturday’s game against the Texas Longhorns, the Florida Gators were on a downturn and on the verge of collapse. That completely changed after they fell behind 17-3 in the second quarter. Florida closed the game on a 24-7 run to beat Texas 27-24, delivering one of the most important wins of the season for head coach Jon Sumrall.
The comeback came behind a quarterback making his first career start. It also came from a team that looked lifeless just a couple of weeks ago.
Tramell Jones Jr. stays composed in his first start
Quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. found a way to thrive in multiple situations. He finished 22-of-35 with two touchdowns, and he added 41 yards on the ground on 10 carries.
The numbers don’t jump off the page. However, the way he got there is what stood out. Jones stayed composed, took what the Longhorns defense gave him, and wasn’t afraid to settle for three or four yards a play to move the chains. That’s a mature approach for a first-time starter, especially in a game where his team trailed by two scores. It’s also the smart move from offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner to create easy plays for Jones.
When the Gators needed more than that, he delivered. Jones made big plays in the second half and helped clinch the win. His willingness to use his legs gave Florida another dimension, and it kept Texas from settling into a rhythm in the second half, as they held the ball for a whopping 21:05.
The biggest factor in this game was third down. In the first half, the Gators were atrocious in those situations, going 0-for-6 on third down in the first half. That’s a big reason they found themselves in a 17-3 hole.
Once the second half began, Florida calmed down and figured it out. The Gators converted eight of their final 13 third-down attempts to finish the game, including a nine-yard run to seal the game from Jones.
Those conversions extended drives, kept the Texas offense on the sideline, and gave Jones the chance to settle in and lead the comeback.
It’s not a surprise that the turnaround on third down lined up with the turnaround on the scoreboard. When an offense can stay on the field, it wears down a defense, and that’s exactly what happened in the second half.
A win that shows real resilience for Jon Sumrall
The most encouraging part of this win isn’t any single stat. It’s the level of resilience the Gators showed. They battled, scratched, clawed, and never gave up.
That wasn’t the case against the South Carolina Gamecocks and Missouri Tigers. In those games, you could tell this team was downtrodden when they got behind. Once things started going wrong, Florida didn’t have an answer. Against Texas, the Gators never lost hope and never lost focus, even when they were down two scores against a premier opponent.
That’s why this game is a pivotal game of Sumrall’s short tenure with the Florida Gators. His team finally showed it can overcome the type of adversity it hadn’t figured out how to handle yet.
Whether this becomes a true turning point depends on what comes next. Florida now has a quarterback who looked steady in his first start and a team that proved it can respond when things go sideways. If the Gators can carry that same composure into the rest of the season, the win over Texas could end up being the moment everything changed.
