If you were hoping that the blood clot scare around Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was going to be a blip on the radar, there’s bad news.

Hurts’ blood clot issue is, in fact, a long-term issue. We don’t know the full details just yet. And the Eagles may not know yet, themselves. But one thing that we do know is that Hurts’ prognosis is going to require an extended absence. And, as a result, Hurts is headed to injured reserve per reports.

The concern for Hurts’ health became evident rather quickly once the team issued a statement on his status. Blood clots are no joke and can create significant health risks — and it seems that Hurts’ circumstances go beyond that of a superficial issue that needed a quick fix.

So now, it’s the Tanner McKee show for the Eagles behind center — the latest in a series of blows to the Eagles’ offense this season. You almost couldn’t have scripted a more chaotic script at the beginning of the season if you tried. The star running back injures his hamstring. The All-Pro right tackle abruptly retires. A staple of the interior is traded away. And now, blood clots land the starting quarterback on injured reserve. Presumably for an indefinite period of time.

Life comes at you fast. And for Hurts in particular, there should be no rush on a return timeline. All this does for Philadelphia is affirm what we already knew. This season is off the rails. Hurts is out for “the foreseeable future”. He, like the Eagles, must now turn their attention to a long-term view. Best wishes in his recovery — and who knows what this team will look like when he’s ready to return.
