Something changed for the Oklahoma Sooners after beating Mississippi State, and it could have an effect on OU at the end of the season
After beating Mississippi State, the Oklahoma Sooners are suddenly in a position no one would have guessed they would be in.
“We got on a bus and drove for an hour,” Head coach Brent Venables started to tell reporters after the game while describing what the flu-ridden Oklahoma Sooners went through before playing Mississippi State.
“The guys were taking pills for the flu, and getting IVs and all those things. I’m not looking for pity or throwing a pity party, but that’s what we’ve been living through. I’m incredibly thankful for our guys’ toughness and courage.”
That toughness and courage helped them win in Starkville on Saturday. And the score didn’t tell the whole story—it should have been a much bigger win. But this win has done something for the Sooners. Well, this win, along with a lot of other things, seems to be going their way.
Now that OU is 4-3 and now 3-4, there’s still a chance that OU makes the College Football Playoff. That may sound a bit wild, but who’s to say that if they go 9-3, they won’t be one of the SEC teams that gets in with three losses?
Sooners could have a shot at the College Football Playoff if they win out
There’s been a ton of craziness over the last two weeks. These have been two of the craziest weeks in college football. And it’s shown that an SEC team could get in with three losses. Now, that would require more losses to follow, but it’s possible. Only two SEC teams have one loss: Kentucky and Georgia.
Everyone else has two losses or three. But that could easily change. Kentucky is the No. 1 team in the SEC right now. Oklahoma really should have beaten Kentucky. They have shown they can play anyone, and now that the offense is improving, that’s even more true.
Oklahoma plays South Carolina next, who is also 4-3, but coming off a big win over Tennessee. Then they play No. 20 Florida, who’ve shown they can be very good but still have flaws. After that it’s Ole Miss, who just lost to Texas on Saturday night.
Then they finish the season with Texas A&M, one of the worst teams in the SEC, and Missouri, a team that started hot but has cooled down. This is doable. Now, it won’t be easy at all, and let’s be honest: it is unlikely, and the injuries won’t help. But it is doable.
