Alabama Crimson Tide football may have just changed following landmark ruling regarding Brendan Sorsby and sports gambling
Brendan Sorsby is officially allowed to play college football again after a landmark ruling in a Texas court. But the decision goes beyond Sorsby and Texas Tech, and there will be rippling effects for college football and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
On Monday, the sport of college football, and really college athletics as a whole, was changed forever. Despite being banned by the NCAA and talks of joining the supplemental draft, Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby was granted an injunction, and he will be eligible to play for the Red Raiders in 2026.
This situation has set a dangerous precedent that teams like the Alabama Crimson Tide will have to navigate going forward, and it only adds to the plate of head coach Kalen DeBoer and GM Courtney Morgan.
Brendan Sorsby 2025 stats
- 2,800 passing yards, 580 rushing yards.
- 36 total touchdowns.
- 155.1 passer rating, 81.5 QBR.
How the Brendan Sorsby situation affects Alabama
“A judge in district court in Lubbock County, Texas, has granted the injunction requested by Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby. He’s set to be eligible for the 2026 season. Sorsby cannot play in Texas Tech’s first two games, which was the penalty his legal team suggested to the NCAA.” – ESPN
Every spring and summer, not only in Alabama, but in every college football program, athletes are sat down by coaches, front office members, and even third parties to explain that you aren’t allowed to gamble on your sport, or any sport.
Yet all of those players woke up this morning and saw that if you have a good enough lawyer (or the funds to afford Jeffrey Kessler as your representation), you not only can bet on your sport, but bet on your own team and get away with it.
“This court finds that applicant has demonstrated that he will suffer a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury if this court does not issue this temporary injunction because he will be unable to participate as a member of Texas Tech University’s 2026 football team.” – Court statement via ON3.
How Alabama can combat Monday’s ruling
The Crimson Tide has already had a run-in with gambling, firing former head baseball coach Brad Bohannon for giving insider information to a gambler. That should scare players at the University straight, but this ruling doesn’t help.
It will be on the leadership at the capstone to make sure that Alabama has the proper plans in place to skirt any potential issues going forward.
