Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin, perhaps inadvertently, took a shot at the Alabama Crimson Tide this week.
Kiffin met with reporters earlier this week to discuss the Rebels' upcoming game against the Georgia Bulldogs.
The fifth-year Ole Miss head coach spent part of his press conference heaping praise on Georgia, suggesting that the Bulldogs are still the premier program in college football despite their loss to Alabama earlier this season (a wise move by Kiffin…there's no need to give Kirby Smart any bulletin board material).
Kiffin then suggested that the only reason Alabama beat Georgia is because they had a "miracle half" in their 41-34 win against the Bulldogs. He also said that Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe turned into Michael Vick during that "miracle half" against Georgia.
"When you look at the tape, really, again, that one program (Alabama), you know, with a miracle half of Michael Vick showed up," said Kiffin. "And I just watched the film this morning and it looked like on a field of everybody that was big and fast, he (Alabama QB Jalen Milroe) was faster than everybody. And that’s the only game they (Georgia) lost, with all that happening, they still came all the way back and took the lead at Alabama."
Ouch. I'm sure Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is going to hear that comment and grit his teeth a bit. DeBoer probably thinks the Alabama team that played that "miracle half" against Georgia is the true identity of his team. That's what he's trying to get Alabama back to as they enter the final few weeks of the season.
Though at the same time, Kiffin is probably right. We haven't really seen Alabama play at that same level since that win against Georgia. Maybe Bama figures it out — their 34-0 win against Missouri last week is a sign that things are moving in the right direction in Tuscaloosa — but I don't think many people in college football think that a rematch between Georgia and Alabama would play out the same way it did in September.
Still, I can't imagine that Kiffin's "miracle half" comment will go over very well in Alabama's locker room.
