One of the more intriguing storylines of former Auburn Tigers was that of quarterback Payton Thorne. After a failed stint with the Cincinnati Bengals, Thorne decided to take his talents north of the border to the Canadian Football League. He signed a contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

With Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros nearing retirement age, there were questions around the organization about who would become the heir apparent in Winnipeg. That shifted significantly this week.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers place Payton Thorne on suspended list

On Thursday afternoon, the Blue Bombers placed Payton Thorne on the suspended list. He was placed on the list after deciding to leave the team.

It’s a somewhat surprising decision for Thorne, but he seemingly fell down on the depth chart, with former UFL MVP Bryce Perkins and Taylor Elgersma taking a lead to earn the backup job to Collaros. Head coach Mike O’Shea talked about his departure, emphasizing how good of a person Thorne is.

“He’s a great kid. He’s really smart. I’m sure he’s got a future in football still, it’s just this is what he had to do.

“But I also am genuinely excited if somebody has things figured out enough that this is the decision they make because it’s not an easy decision. And there are guys I disagree with when I say, ‘I don’t think you’re doing the right thing.’ But they’re all individual conversations. You can’t lump them all in together. Every year it happens and every year you navigate those conversations based on who the guy is and what he’s saying.

“I don’t think he’s done with football yet.”

What is next for Thorne now that he’s left the Blue Bombers? Could a return to the NFL be in his future? Only time will tell what is next for Thorne.
