Florida Gators basketball head coach Todd Golden has been excellent in the transfer portal during his tenure in Gainesville. His latest addition might be the most unique in all of college basketball.

After a disappointing loss in the round of 32 to the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Florida Gators had a lot of work to do to retain the players on the roster.

They are still waiting on decisions from forwards Thomas Haugh, Rueben Chinyelu, and Alex Condon after forward Micah Handlogten and center Oliver Rioux have already entered. Last year, they added guards Xavian Lee and Boogie Fland, helping them to a number one seed.

In prior years, Golden found guards Will Richard, Alijah Martin, and Walter Clayton Jr. in the transfer portal, and his latest addition is a familiar face.

Todd Golden reunites with guard Denzel Aberdeen

Head coach Todd Golden has landed another top recruit in the transfer portal, and it’s quite an interesting one: former Gators guard Denzel Aberdeen.

Last season, Aberdeel played with the Kentucky Wildcats and there was some animosity between both sides. Golden had this to say about Aberdeen’s departure at SEC Media Days.

“We would have loved to have Denzel back,” Golden said at SEC Media Day on Oct. 15. “There were other things that were more important to him than what we had to offer.”

That animosity isn’t the only thing interesting about this move. Aberdeen has technically played four seasons of college basketball, but the new executive order on college sports from President Donald Trump gives every player five years of eligibility. That rule is why the Gators are betting on Aberdeen playing for them in the 2026-2027 season.

It’s a great addition, as Fland has already committed to come back for next season. If they can somehow get the trio of forwards to return, they would immediately be the front-runners for the national championship.
